The series of detentions served by Don & Rose had come to a sudden halt due to the petrification of Don added on top of that the December break. Now, with the break over in January and Don as fit as ever, Rafe continued with the sentencing of the two students. 50 house points had already been deducted from both Gryffindor & Slytherin and now the two had been sentenced to what may of felt like a life time sentence of detentions.
Naturally, Rafe chose a more traditional manner of serving detention. He was aware of the dangers involved of sending the students out to the Forbidden Forest and honestly, he didn't see the purpose in sending two students and one adult to the dangerous woods for them to learn something. What could possibly be learned from freezing in the woods awaiting some form of magical creature or beast to attack them. Instead, Rafe decided to host their detention in the Kitchens with the approval of the chief house elf.
"Today, you will be serving detention in the kitchens. " Rafe spoke clearly sounding as tired as the two may of felt. The two had earned their detention from the Halloween dinner where they had masterminded a brutal attack on the school , students and staff. Though brutal isn't exactly the word that he would of used to describe the incident, it was what was listed on their detention slip.
After tickling the pear portrait, Rafe made his way into the empty kitchen illuminated by a few floating lamps where multiple stacks of large pewter cauldrons were ready to be scrubbed. " Your task today is to clean these cauldrons. While it may seem like an easy task, we'll be doing things the more authentic and traditional way. " He said as he placed a bucket, a sponge , rubber gloves ( because he was nice ) and cleaning product in front of them before placing his hand out with the palm facing upwards.

As detentions went, the ones hosted by Professor Lauren weren't that bad. Don was something of an expert here, having experienced the punishment methods of various Hogwarts staff members first-hand. Channing's were probably the worst, though Smith sometimes managed to come up with something so devastatingly dull that it bested everyone else's creativity in making Domhnall McEvoy behave. Perhaps the man was so smart he knew that boredom was the boy's kryptonite; then again, maybe he was just creating tedium out of habit. By comparison, the tasks assigned by Lauren weren't too annoying... and Don had good company with him.
The fourth-year grinned as the pear was tickled and the door appeared. "Oh, so that's how to get into the kitchens. Thank you for showing us, sir." Both he and Rose had snuck into the kitchens numerous times before, and even knew some of the house-elves by name. It was against school rules for students to go there on their own, of course, but the elves never told on them.
He handed over his wand, unsurprised that the Muggle Studies professor chose a manual task. Not that Don knew any good cleaning spells to help him, even if he'd been allowed to use magic. He picked up a pair of rubber gloves and slipped them on, relieved that Lauren had provided them with protection from chafed skin and blisters. "Why is doing things the Muggle way used as a punishment so often?" Was there an implied threat there - keep breaking rules and you'll be banished to the non-magical world - or was it merely the convenience of easily-produced discomfort?

Of all locations for a detention, the kitchens were not a bad place. At least there was a chance they could sneak a snack if they got a bit peckish, and the house elves were fine company, usually keeping to themselves. Rose stifled a laugh as Don made a show of thanking the Professor for showing them the entrance, knowing the pair had already snuck in numerous times before. At least now, if they were ever caught, they would have a reason for knowing how to enter, and could always feign innocence. It’s not like there was a sign anywhere that said ‘Forbidden to students’, right?
She handed over her wand without complaint, already used to Professor Lauren’s style of detentions. He had warned them, after all, that they would be cleaning up their mess without magic. She simply hadn’t imagined they would still be doing so in January. With a soft sigh, she flopped down next to the pile of dirty cauldrons, grabbing her own pair of rubber gloves. She shrugged in response to Don’s question, “I guess cause most students are used to using magic at home?” She offered as a possible explanation, unsure herself of the answer.
Growing up, she had occasionally done dishes the muggle way, her mother wishing to raise them to understand both worlds. While not exactly pleasant, it wasn’t the worst task they could have given them for detention. “So… um… how was your Christmas break? Were there a lot of other students who stayed back this year?” She asked a bit awkwardly, grabbing a sponge and beginning to wash one of the cauldrons with water from the bucket, forgetting to add the soap in her haste to make small talk to fill up the silence.
"Shut it McEvoy." He snapped back harshly listening to what Don had to say. The boy's comments and smart arse replies were not welcomed by Rafe by any means. He, like many other staff members, had their dinner disturbed that night as well as a few select students. It took ages to bring down all the students and the healers he heard had to work double time to administer the healing potions required. The Australian transfer student requiring extra doses as his body had built up a defence to the Billywig stings causing him to have multiple stings to feel the full effects of things.
" Silence. " He demanded as he looked over to Rose. With their wands now securely in Rafe's palms, Rafe began to walk over to one of the house elves and start up a conversation. However, Rafe had only wanted his conversation between himself and the house elves to be the only conversation happening. " What do you two not understand about the word silence?" He asked as he placed their wands into his pocket and drew out his own.
"Silencio!" He called out casting a silencing spell on the two students so that they would complete their detention in peace. He would of course, undo the spell eventually, just right now, he needed to focus his conversation with the house elves. " Not another word out of the both of you or I'll start deducting house points again. " He threatened as he walked over and away from the two students to talk to the house elves.

Don was in a pretty good mood, which was his default mode of existence. He wouldn't let something as trivial as detention ruin his day, not even if it involved some mildly unpleasant manual work. Ignoring Lauren's demands for silence, he listened to Rose's theory and nodded in agreement. The punishment of doing housework without magic would appear far more unpleasant to those who typically used spells for the job.
He reached out and took the nearest cauldron, a heavy iron one. It looked like it had held mashed potatoes, the starchy yellowish stains already dry and crusted. The fourth-year was opening his mouth to respond to the inquiry about his Christmas holiday when the professor demanded silence once again. Turning to the man, he noticed a wand being drawn. No, there was no way, he wouldn't-- His reflexes, honed by multiple experiences of dodging and blocking incoming jinxes his disgruntled housemates loosed at him, took over as the professor aimed his wand at them. The teen lifted the cauldron and held it up like an unwieldy round shield, the charm bouncing off of it without any effect. Too shocked to say anything at once, he lowered the impromptu bulwark and stared at Lauren, who uttered one final threat before walking over to a group of house-elves.
The Slytherin's expression had grown sober, though not quite revealing his irritation. He was used to spells being launched at him, even though having a professor do it was a first. But Rose could have been hit, too, and that was a little more difficult to let slide. He stepped forward, placing himself slightly in front of Rose - just in case another spell was loosed in their direction. "Sir? It seems you are disregarding the professors' rules of conduct. You cannot use magic on students." Even Channing never did, and she was the only adult he would have expected to try and find ways around such a ban. Don himself broke most rules freely and wasn't too worried about it, because for a student, the consequences usually were either loss of house points or detention. For an adult, however, it would be an official warning at the least - or getting fired, if the breach was repeated. "I suppose you simply forgot, and will not try that again," he stated firmly, his gaze locked on Lauren. He wouldn't go snitching for this one infringement, but he might consider it if something like that was attempted again.
Such a confrontation may have looked disrespectful, and it probably was. But Don refused to respect his elders simply for their age. One's behaviour was a determining factor, and the only way to earn his positive regard. Still keeping the man in his field of vision, Don turned to Rose. "Only a handful of us stayed. The break went well; the school feels different when most students are away, but it gives new opportunities for exploration," he answered the question in a much warmer tone, not primpting her to speak in response in case she didn't want to lose house points. His usual relaxed expression was sliding back into place - except for slight tension around his eyes, as he waited for the professor's reaction to the show of disobedience.
ooc: Cleared this with Gio, Rafe can take 10 points from Slytherin once (no matter how much more Don speaks), and 10 points from Gryffindor IF Rose chooses to talk in the next post (also only once).

Rose knew that some professors preferred silence during their detentions - although she didn’t quite understand why, other than to make the experience that much more boring - but she had never experienced a professor actually attempting to silence her during such a punishment. At the sound of the spell being cast, she quickly attempted to dodge away, diving to her left. Luckily Don’s reaction was much most effective than hers and he managed to deflect the spell away from the pair. “Merlin!” She exclaimed loudly in shock as she straightened back up, wide eyes darting between Don and Professor Lauren.
Before she could say anything more, Don began essentially scolding the professor for his attempt to silence the pair, phrasing it much kinder than Rose would have done. With great effort she refrained from joining in, slightly worried Lauren would attempt something worse if she were to speak her mind. Don must have been in a good mood as he gave the professor a second chance, offering to simply forget the whole thing happened, as long as it did not happen again. A part of Rose was against such a gesture. After all, he was a professor. If they were punished for breaking the rules, why shouldn’t he be? Yet, she decided to follow Don’s lead and be magnanimous - at least this once.
His tone, cold and biting when speaking to the professor, turned warmer as he answered her question, the subject matter having slipped her mind momentarily during the confrontation. Eyes still focused on Professor Lauren, slightly narrowed in distrust, she smiled slightly at Don’s reply, only looking at him briefly before returning her gaze to their common enemy. There was no way she was letting him have the upper hand again, particularly as Don had turned slightly away from him to face her. She was still facing Lauren directly, and she made sure he knew it. “Sounds like you may have discovered some new Hogwarts secrets. Care to share?” She prompted, staring Lauren down, almost challenging him to try that again as she spoke.
Rafe eyed down Don's response with his cold and icy blue eyes. He didn't care much for what he had to say but he also refused to allow the boy speak to him in the way he did. " Mind I remind you that it's also against the rules to play a prank on the school? " He responded in a sarcastic tone carrying with it a tense accent to his voice. " It's also the reason why both you and Miss Weasley are here with me. " He added as he was somewhat entertained that the boy was able to block his spell with a cauldron. Quite hilarious if anything. Naturally he wasn't able to show or express that he was impressed with the student's attempt at blocking the spell.
" Oh, I didn't forget McEvoy. " He said as he crossed his arms once more. His eyes staring him down watching his every move. " Do you really think the staff would believe you even if you said that I used a spell on you? " He said scoffing slightly at his own words. Rafe could hex the both of them and make it out that they were playing around and both of them got hurt with a stinging jinx. They could of course trace his wand, but given the suspects were Rose and Domhnall, it wouldn't be necessary.
He ignored Rose's attempt at dodging his spell but as an educator of the school, he had a responsibility to the school. He walked over groaning at the same time as he checked on her. " On your feet Weasley. " He uttered knowing this was as far as he would go to showing any form of emotion toward them. " Now, silence between the both of you or else I'll be deducting more house points. " He stated as he locked eyes with both of them before he turned around and walked the other way.
