How the years passed. Ignatius was ruminating over this being his third year teaching since he had left his Auror position at the Ministry. His green eyes bore into the blackboard as he quietly filled it out with today's potion. It was going to be terribly challenging for his first years but he was here to be sure they understood and had help from him throughout the whole process. They would be put in pairs and he was hopeful the younger years could find an older more experienced student to work with.
-- 2 ounces of daisy roots (chopped) -- 1 rat spleen -- 1/4 ounce of leech juice -- 1 caterpillar (sliced) -- 2 ounces of shrivelfig (skinned) Bring to a boil. Add 2 ounces of evenly chopped daisy roots. Add 1/4 ounce of leech juice. Stir clockwise for 30 seconds. Add 1 sliced caterpillar. Stick counter-clockwise for 15 seconds. Add 1 rat spleen. Add 2 ounces of skinned shrivelfig. Stir clockwise for 2 minutes. The potion should be acid green. If orange, it was done incorrectly and is poisonous.
With one last flourish to the board he did a sweep of the room to make sure everything was clean and organized, not to mention well lit. Despite the classroom being in the dungeons he wanted it to feel warm and inviting to promote learning. Students, he found, worked better if they were not intimidated or afraid. Ignatius had worked hard to make the learning space reflect this. If it helped he was not sure of but it didn't stop him.
"Come right in and find your seats. Be aware you will be working in pairs today so please choose seats with your preferred partner. I would very much appreciate if our older students paired with our new first years. As always I am here to assist so do not hesitate to ask." He left his room door open in case anyone might be late, knowing how confusing it could be to traverse the castle in one's first year. He looked to each student as they took their seats and then cleared his throat to get their attention back to him.
"Today we will be brewing the Shrinking Solution. As some of you may know it is a potion that shrinks objects both physically and through time. Can anyone give me an example of what this means before we begin?" He hoped they knew what it meant to shrink through time as well. The first example that came to mind for him was of a toad shrinking to a tadpole, effectively aging backwards. Though there were numerous other examples so he kept his mind open for what might be said.

Dustin really liked the Potions Professor. Not just because the rumours were he had been an Auror, and in real battles, before he had come to teach. But because he seemed to genuinely give them options when pairing rather than forcing them together. Not to mention he seemed to always ensure they knew they could ask for help from him at any point. This was good because Potions was arguably one of the more difficult classes because of how technical everything was.
Uncertainly he looked to his sister and smiled faintly when they were told to sit with someone they wished to work with. Of course, his gaze slid away from her to a new Slytherin first-year, Olivia, who he remembered from the sorting ceremony. As a first year, he knew this had to be all very overwhelming and he thought maybe he could be helpful to her should she want his help. "Um, Olivia right? If you want we could partner for today if you'd like?"
Potions class was fun in its way. It was similar enough to muggle science class, that she felt brave enough to do it. Blood, bugs, and dirt weren’t scary, and since the bugs were usually dead, Insuk could brew most potions without crying. Dead things were not scary. Live things made her feel like a murderer.
Her guilt was overshadowed by her excitement at the thought of brewing the Shrinking Solution. She couldn’t wait to get started.
Raising her hand, “For some animals or insects, it can... sort of turn them back into babies." She wasn't sure how else to describe it. Was there a word for it? She didn't know one in Korean, and she definitely didn't know the word in English. The closest she could think of was to think of it like a reverse aging potion. Even then, it wasn't quite the same.
"Like... butterflies. It can change butterflies back into caterpillars.” Her elementary school had watched a caterpillar turn into a butterfly. They’d watched it every day for a month. Some of her classmates said it was boring, but not her. Inside that cocoon, the magic known as science was happening. A potion that could reverse that process in seconds was almost unbelievable.
Noah sat up straight. Shrinking solution! Now that’s the sort of magic he wanted to learn. Not the boring stuff in History of Magic. “Is the baby thing true? So... does that mean since humans are animals, if I were to drink it that would happen to me. Would I shrink like Ant-Man or would I turn into a baby?” If he turned into a baby, did his brain become all baby-like too? Or did he remember everything he’d learned? A walking talking baby version of him? He didn’t think the world was ready for that.
But... was it ready for the chaos of a mini version? He’d be able to go anywhere he wanted and no one could stop him. Unless something ate him. Did owls eat shrunken people? There were a lot of them at Hogwarts. If they did, he was sure he’d be able to win a fight with at least one. Probably.

The ingredient list had a few items that caused Olivia to pale visibly. Rat spleen? Leech juice? Sliced caterpillar? Her stomach roiled and she was glad she'd skipped breakfast today. There was no way she would touch any of those nasty things.
She barely listened to the information on the potion's effects - it would shrink stuff, just like Reducio, so why not use the spell instead? Oh, right, it could also make animals younger. Well, it's not like the potion effects were permanent - it was more like a party trick.
Although Olivia's thoughts were still dwelling entirely in the negative side of this class, she forced her lips into a smile when the older boy offered to pair up. She didn't know him, and it was best to be nice to everyone until she found out who could and should be openly looked down on. As a Slytherin, he probably wouldn't be a Muggleborn at least. "Yes, Olivia Mulciber," she introduced herself, hoping he would use his full name as well. So many of her housemates had well-known surnames - just as she did, even if hers was notorious due to Death Eater associations.
"I'd love to pair up. I could chop the daisy roots and skin the shrivelfig," she offered eagerly, hoping that taking on the two rather burdensome tasks would free her from the need to handle the less savoury materials.

"Oh, um, Burke. Dustin Burke." Mulciber was a name he knew but he figured the adults reputations didn't matter really. Just like being a Burke didn't mean he had to turn out like his Mum or Dad, or any of his other family members. Dustin was just Dustin which meant he could go or do what he felt like. At least that's how he felt about things, he wasn't sure if that worked for anyone but himself, sometimes family was complicated.
"Okay. I can slice the caterpillar, get us all the ingredients we need." Potions could be gross with ingredients and the idea of potentially drinking this potion grossed him out. Heck he didn't even like the idea of it accidentally splashing on him either. With the tasks separated he went to go get the ingredients from the provided stock and came back with everything. Thank Merlin the ingredients not on the school list were provided here. Some were way too expensive otherwise.
The rat spleen was put in a little glass container because he didn't want a random spleen directly on the table and he placed the leech juice next to it. Now that everything was here he situated the cauldron and filled it with water to get it started on the boiling part. Now for the part he didn't want to do, slicing the caterpillar. He still did it, holding the smooshy caterpillar still as he carefully sliced it to even pieces. "This potion is...kinda gross isn't it? Not that the others are better or worse, a lot if ingredients are on the gross side."

As soon as the professor announced that they would be working in pairs with their deskmate, Meredith wasted no time claiming a seat next to Thalia. She had yet to really meet anybody else worth her time, at least within her classes, and she had no interest in working with somebody she did not know. After all, they could be an idiot. With time she was sure she would learn more about her classmates so she could pair up a bit more strategically, but for now at least choosing a friend would lead to an enjoyable class.
She was a bit uncertain as to how classes were run at this school, and so waited until other students began preparing their stations before taking out her own supplies. She started with her cauldron so she could begin the boiling process while they prepped their ingredients. “Would you prefer chopping the daisy roots or slicing the caterpillar?” Meredith was not really the squeamish type, and so decided to give Thalia the option to choose. She didn’t mind working with gross ingredients. After all, she had to feed live bugs to her pet tarantula on a daily basis. Slicing into a dead caterpillar didn’t seem so bad in comparison.

Ella had yet to find a class subject she did not enjoy, and so was in a good mood when entering the potions classroom, glad to be back at Hogwarts and ready to learn more. She took a seat next to Blaise, noticing that her cousin and brother were already paired up. While that would have upset her the previous year, it did not anymore. She had since gotten much closer with Blaise and Ezra, and found herself spending more time with them as opposed to with her family members.
After Insuk gave her answer to the professor’s question, during which Ella scribbled a few notes, she also raised her hand. “They will also shrink in size physically, smaller than the creature would be even as a baby. I believe I read somewhere of some wizards carrying entire herds of pigs in their pockets using this potion.” Ella was nothing if not a bookworm, enjoying reading whenever possible. She simply devoured books, and although she much preferred her romance novels, the interest came in handy for classes as well.
With the theoretical portion of the class over, the students began turning their attention to the practical section. Ella swiveled in her seat to face Blaise. “So, partners?” She asked with a smile. She knew the answer would be yes, but she wanted to make sure. She wouldn’t have been surprised if Blaise and Ezra had already made a pact to work together in potions, leaving her to find another partner.
If she could send texts at Hogwarts, Romy would use the heart-eyes emoji every time she had Potions! That was how much she loved the class!
Heart-eyes aside, she understood from Professor Cassowary’s instruction that the potion they would be attempting in this lesson could be a challenging one. Somehow, she was now one of the oldest and most experienced students in the cohort. Timidly but loud enough that those near her could hear, she offered, “I’m a third year if anybody would like to pair up…!”
When her seating arrangement was settled, the brunette listened attentively to the question posed by the professor, as well as answers from her peers. The two Gryffindors’ responses reminded her of a historical example of the use of the Shrinking Solution that she came across in a book, so she raised her hand to speak about it. “I read that a wizard once poured Shrinking Solution down the well in a Muggle village and terrorised the shrunken villagers by chasing them around. So in the villagers’ case, they shrunk like Ant-Man.”
It was a bad, bad misuse of magic. Wait, do people in this classroom even know what Ant-Man is?

Burke! That was a name from the Sacred Twenty-Eight. However, Olivia knew a part of that family had weakened their status by marrying half-bloods. Did Dustin come from a respectable branch of the Burke family, or a sullied offshoot? She would have to try and find out during the upcoming days. Still, even a half-blood Burke might be someone to respect. "Nice to meet you, Dustin. Thanks for offering to work with me."
The boy volunteered to fetch the required ingredients and filled the cauldron with water. Olivia almost felt like she wasn't contributing enough. Was he always so helpful, or was he simply making an extra effort to accommodate a first-year? Either way, he seemed like a good one to have around.
She focused on reducing the daisy root to even-sized bits and did not let her eyes stray to the side, where Dustin was handling the caterpillar. Confessing that she didn't have the stomach to interact with certain ingredients was out of the question - perhaps she could simply wear thick gloves the next time. However, the moment her today's partner brought up the nasty nature of the brewing process, she agreed eagery. "It is, very much so! I'm glad it's not something we'll ever have to consume." She contracted her eyebrows into a frown upon hearing that most ingredients weren't any lovelier than what they had for today. "I suppose it's just something to get used to." Olivia made a mental note to never eat anything before a Potions class. She was forced to admit that even the plant-based ingredients were a little disconcerting, as the shrivelfig she now picked up proved to be clammy underneath its skin.

Occasionally, Potions was a little disgusting - but Thalia saw it as a normal part of witchcraft. She could tolerate most potion ingredients without so much as wrinkling her nose - unless they had a terrible odour. Excited to be working with Meredith today, she didn't take long in choosing which task she preferred. The caterpillar simply happened to be placed closer than the daisy root.
"I can slice the caterpillar." She picked up the larva and placed it on the cutting board. "Do you want to stir when needed?" Thalia had found that stirring was best delegated to a single person. With both partners stirring, it was only too easy to get confused and disturb the potion too much. "And do you use a watch or an hourglass?" Although Thalia preferred an enchanted hourglass, she had seen other students use watches or simply rely on the classroom clock.

Henrietta's eyes scanned the classroom, hoping to spot a first-year in need of a partner. As much as she wanted to focus on her own learning and mastery of the subject, she couldn't ignore Professor Cassowary's request for the older students to guide the newcomers.
She had been in their shoes not too long ago, overwhelmed and unsure in this new world of magic. If she could help ease that transition for someone else, it was her responsibility to do so. However.. it seemed that most of the first years had already found partners, leaving her with few options. Romy's voice caught her attention, the third-year Hufflepuff offering to pair up with anyone still in need.
For a moment, she hesitated. Henrietta had been hoping for a younger student, someone she could mentor and guide through the process. But beggars can't be choosers, and at least Romy seemed enthusiastic about the subject.
With a resigned sigh, Henrietta made her way over to Romy's table. "Looks like we're the last ones standing," she said, offering a polite smile. "I'm Henrietta, second year Gryffindor. Let's work together to nail this potion, shall we?"
She began setting up their station, determined to make the best of the situation. Who knows, maybe Romy's excitement would prove contagious, and they could both learn something from each other.

Blaise sat there and listened to everyone else give a whole bunch of interesting answers. He wasn't sure how someone could get a butterfly into a potion. He didn't think they would cooperate very much.
He craned his neck around to each person as they answered to watch them. He hoped they would get to start soon, though, because that was a lot more fun than just talking about potions.
"Of course!" he said to Ella. They were sitting beside each other and were best friends, of course they would be partners. Though there was a slight part of him that was saddened that Dustin had sat further away and they wouldn't be partners today. But they could always do that another time.

Lia had been so busy writing down notes on the potion that she had neglected to find herself a partner, and soon found herself alone, most of her friends having already paired off. She sighed in exasperation, resigning herself to working on her own, when she noticed a Gryffindor first year without a partner. The professor had asked for them to pair up with younger students, so she figured it was worth a shot. Grabbing her bag and supplies, she walked over to the younger boy’s table. “Hi, my name’s Lia. Would you like to work together?”

Being still quite new to the school as a first year, Lillian didn’t know many people yet, particularly older students, and the few she did know quickly paired up before she had a chance to claim a partner. That meant she would have to approach someone new, unless she wanted to work alone for that class, which would not be ideal.
Looking around the room, she noticed the Ravenclaw who answered the professor’s original question was still on their own. Obviously they already knew a bit about the potion, so Lillian figured they would probably be a good partner, able to help guide her through the process. Making her way over to the girl, she cleared her throat as she got near to get the Ravenclaw’s attention over the noise of all the other students talking. “Hi. I was wondering if you’d like to partner up? My name’s Lillian, but you can call me Lilli. I’m a new first year.” She hoped mentioning that she was a first year would endear the older student to help her, particularly as the professor had asked for upper years to help their younger peers.
