In just a few months, O.W.L.s would start - this fact alone had a lot of fifth years in perpetual state of terror. Maeve wasn't one of them. She was more irritable than usual and she did feel intense pressure to do well, but she had a carefully prepared study schedule and she followed it meticulously. It meant that when she wasn't attending classes, practising Quidditch or sleeping, she was either studying theory at the library or improving her spellwork in some empty classroom.
Today was a library day. The place was noisier and more crowded than usual - it had been a challenge to find an empty table to sit at. The redhead had several books stacked in front of her and was summarizing key facts from one of them into a scroll of parchment, struggling to focus over the hubbub at a nearby table.

The crumpled - and opened - letter was on the table. A stack of books were on the table. Harrison was hunched over the table.
With mumbling and scanning eyes, the young boy flipped through books, even though he only had about half an idea of what he was looking for. He knew the word, Veela, but that didn't narrow down what it was. The name could be for a family, a place, a creature or... well, Harrison didn't know, exactly.
That was why he was in the library, going through a large volume of books and tomes and scrolls.
A natural curiosity to find answers pushed him on, to find out the solution:
What was a Veela?
And in the process, Harrison thumped a book to one side, as he moved to the next...

The chatty group at a nearby table finally quieted down, having just barely avoided Maeve's wrath. She continued taking notes from the book, enjoying the quiet- thud! Her head whipped around, cold blue eyes zeroing in on the culprit. Poole. Inexplicably, some of her anger subsided. So far she had avoided being openly nasty to the kid; the entertainment value he generally produced earned him some leniency.
Deciding to take a break, she rose from her seat and walked over to the first year. "Revising for the end of term exams, Poole?" she asked casually, surveying the books he was poring over. "Beings Studies?" she ventured.

A voice from beside him caused Harrison to jump--
"Wha? Oh, hi, Maeve."
--but he calmed quickly, as he turned to look at the redhead Slytherin. His dueling rival. Her blue stare was still intense, but Harrison met it with his own brown gaze and offered a lopsided grin at her questions.
"No, not exactly," he said, as he leaned over and pointed to the word Veela in the letter. "I found this and saw something about a Veela. So, now I'm trying to find out what a Veela is, because it sounds like someone is one... but I dunno if that means someone is, like, a vampire or werewolf or something?"
Harrison hummed to himself, as he frowned at the open book in front of him. He was oblivious to the potential privacy of the letter, being so focused on the riddle.

Maeve looked at the fire-damaged letter Poole was indicating, her curiosity piqued. "A Veela? That's interesting." She didn't think much of what she was saying, her eyes flicking back and forth as she took in the contents of the correspondence. "I've seen one Veela among the second years, and Professor Weasley is part-Veela..."
Aiden. As in Aiden Pine? This was already a solid clue. Pine was frequently seen in the company of two girls. Both pretty blondes... Could Cressida have Veela blood? But the line about transferring to Dahshur didn't fit, Cressida would be graduating this term. And the mention of a hospital... wasn't Stirling's father at St Mungo's?
"Veelas aren't like vampires or werewoves. They're far more deceitful. A Veela can cast a Charm on boys, make them act odd, even do stupid and risky things... make them think they've fallen in love with a Veela."

Harrison's mouth hung open as Maeve explained what a Veela did.
That sounded horrible!
"Wait... Professor Weasley is one, too? Isn't that bad? What if she uses her Veela powers against boys?!"
The young Gryffindor looked down at the books hurriedly, as he tried to narrow down which one to read more in. But, he wasn't quite sure, so he turned to Maeve.
"Which one would have info about Veela? I need to know more, to make sure I'm not being tricked or controlled or something..."
Though, he also wondered about the thing against Werewolves. Harrison was in the support club, he had only met nice people there, so he wasn't sure. Yet, maybe it was better to read up and decide after?

Although her expression remained serious, Maeve smiled inwardly at how receptive Poole was to the truths of the wizarding world. Perhaps he wasn't as bad a Muggleborn as the likes of Fowell.
"I believe Professor Weasley knows any such attempt would mean she loses her job, so she behaves."
She looked through the titles of the books present on the table. "A Beginner's Guide to Magical Beings would be a good place to start, although it downplays the effect a Veela can have. A lot of Beings are nowadays made to seem less dangerous than they are, just so society accepts them."
The redhead eyed the letter again, considering options. "Would you mind lending the letter to me? It might be something I should show to a faculty member, as a Prefect."

The statement about Professor Weasley made sense, Harrison supposed.
There was still some level of alarm about the Veela powers, though, as he reasoned there might not have been an easy way to detect it. And who was to say if he hadn't been controlled in the past? Maybe he was in some state of control already? What if this was some elaborate Veela scheme right now?
Uh oh.
Maeve offered an answer to the question about the book. Harrison found it, opened it, and began scanning for details.
"That sounds even more dangerous, because people might not even be aware or prepared for danger," the Gryffindor muttered, as he frowned. "And... uh, sure, I guess? I was just going to put the letter in the fire, but if you think it's worth looking into as Prefect?"
Harrison had been fortunate to speak to Maeve, it seemed.

"I will bring this to the faculty's attention," she promised, picking up the letter and scanning it again. Of course, most Hogwarts staff members would know what Stirling was - or so she assumed. It wasn't something one could so easily hide from authorities, there were records they had access to. Concealing something like that from peers was much easier.
Poole's reaction to her summary of Veela abilities made her want to enlighten him more. Just in case he had any doubts. "Veelas look human for the most part but they really aren't." The parchment was folded up neatly and disappeared into her pocket. "They reveal their true form when angry - their faces transform into something birdlike, with sharp beaks, and they sprout scaly wings."

Harrison nodded as Maeve mentioned the faculty, as he felt some relief, despite the information he read in the book. There was a part of the Gryffindor that hoped he hadn't made life difficult for someone, but he couldn't ignore how dangerous Veela's sounded, and a Prefect seemed just as concerned; so, with that rationale, the first year could believe he had done the right thing.
Especially when Maeve told him more.
"They transform? With sharp beaks and scaly wings?" Harrison's eyes widened as he looked over to her with a sudden jerk of the head. "That -- that's scary as all get out! It gives me goose-pimples!"
There was a flash in Harrison's mind of birds - Avis birds - and the terrifying notion of them becoming transformed and angry Veela flocks...
Oh no.
"This sounds super important to handle, I was lucky a Prefect was here!"

Maeve smiled - quite genuinely, in fact. Perhaps Poole could grow up to be a decent member of the wizarding society, despite his Muggleborn blood. "You are right, it is scary. I can only guess how many boys were already affected by this..." She sighed.
"I think I'll head to the staffroom now, see if I can catch a Head of House. See you around, Harrison." The Slytherin went back to her table to place her books back into the bag - and return some to their shelves. The day promised to be a good one.

Harrison could only swallow, as he considered Maeve's words, and thought about how many boys had been tricked or controlled - it was probably hundreds!
When she mentioned leaving for the staffroom, to see a Head of House, the young Gryffindor absently nodded with a perplexed mind. He looked up from the book, which had only some basics about the Veela - from what he could tell - and watched as the Slytherin began to pack up. Harrison didn't see any reason to delay acting on the situation, so he agreed, though still lost in thoughts about being mind controlled.
"O-okay, that sounds good!"
And Harrison would stay there reading the book for a while even after Maeve departed.
