Of all possible project partners, Rose could not believe her poor luck, as she had been assigned to work with Derrick Balor. The boy simply could not take a joke and the two had been in an ongoing feud since she had dared prank him in their first year. Don had tried to defuse some of the tension recently, mentioning the boy’s adamant defense of multiple muggleborns within their house including himself, but Rose was not quite swayed. At least not without seeing proof with her own eyes.
So it was with great reluctance that Rose made her way down the grounds towards the Care of Magical Creatures classroom, where the two were to meet so they could begin work on their latest class project. Rose had been enjoying the new class so far, and so having part of her grade determined by her collaboration with a Slytherin prick was not the most enticing. All she could hope was that they managed to get a passing grade without seriously injuring one another.

As Derrick made his way down to the grounds towards the Care of Magical Creatures class he was deep in thought. He’d spent the first while trying to understand why the professor had chosen Rose for his partner. Interhouse cooperation didn’t seem like a good enough answer, and sabotage was just as rubbish. Hadn’t Professor Shepard known of the mutual dislike between the two of them? Though when he considered he realized maybe The Professor didn’t. Had Rose and Derrick really made it so far into the year and avoided being at each other’s throats in a class? He realized perhaps they had, they’d probably made up from it elsewhere, but at the very least it explained to Derrick why their pairing was possible. He simply couldn’t stomach the idea that any professor believed pairing two feuding students on a graded project would ever result in peace. That was too fantastic for even the most well being individual right? Still, Rose hadn’t demanded another partner, and Derrick refused to be labeled as the unreasonable party. That happened far to often, and if anyone was going to lose their house points for refusing to cooperate it wasn’t going to be him.
So on the way down he started working a playbook in his head on how he was going to make this project work. He didn’t know how much Rose cared about her marks, or the depths in which she might loath him. Was it enough she might cut off her own nose to spite her face? He hoped not, because that didn’t leave any room to make this work. Derrick for his part cared significantly more about his marks than his dislike of Rose. So, he reasoned the proper first step would be to get to a understanding, after all this wasn’t the type of project they could get through while ignoring each other the whole time…Someone would have to be mature, and offer an olive branch and since Derrick highly doubted it’d be her, so…If it was the smart thing was to get to a understanding, and he understood that, and believed she wouldn’t didn’t that mean he should be the one to do it? Wasn’t it better than failing this whole thing? The answer was yes, but he wasn’t exactly thrilled about it.
Rose arrived before he did, and he’d walk up trying not to come off as stiff, and while he kept his face neutral he failed entirely to keep his posture from being rigid and defensive. “Hello Rose,” he said, awkwardly and stiffly. There was forced pleasantness in his tone, and a crooked smile that was supposed to be friendly playing a his lips.
“Look you weren’t,” he started to say my first choice either, but instantly recognized that as being antagonistic. “What I meant was, I’m sure we weren’t each other’s first choices,” he said electing for a better choice of words. “But…We are working together…So umm...” He paused and shrugged towards her. Hoping she’d see he was making an effort, and wouldn’t leave him there struggling to make peace on his own.

Waiting by the outdoor classroom area, leaning against a nearby rock, Rose eyed Derrick with distrust as he arrived and greeted her. “Hello Derrick,” she responded bitterly, frowning in response to his odd smirk. Was he mocking her? He looked like he was mocking her, or about to enact his next move in their ongoing feud. Either way, she remained on guard, arms crossed in front of her defensively.
Her eyebrows rose as he began his sentence, daring him to finish his thought, before he decided to correct himself. “You can say that again,” she mumbled in response. At least it seemed both of them were just as unhappy with this pairing. It meant they were both in a hurry to simply get it over with and be done with one another. Unfortunately this haste did not seem to have manifested in his communication skills as he trailed off in his sentence, causing Rose to get visibly impatient. “Just spit it out, Balor.” She huffed loudly, throwing her arms up in irritation, when he simply ended his sentence with a shrug, as if he forgot what he was about to say. It looked like she was going to have to carry the workload in this duo, not that she was surprised at that fact.
“Fine, you want me to say it? Neither of us want to be here, so let’s just get this over with so we can pass and get out of here. Agreed?” She held out her hand to shake on the agreement, hoping Derrick cared enough about his grades to help her on the assignment despite their dislike of one another. While she wasn’t the most studious, she did work hard to keep up with her school work, and she did not wish to get another howler from her mother that year because she was failing Care of Magical Creatures. One did not want to mess with Hermione Granger-Weasley, particularly when it came to school performance.

Well they hadn’t drawn their wands yet, so that was a promising start, but how far away were they from changing that? Derrick tensed as Rose began to talk, and it felt just like it always did. The tension was there without having to do anything, it wasn’t so different from being back home. The insult he posed to Rose was existing, at least that was how it felt. His instincts demanded he respond in kind. If she was simply going to be hard to work with, there was no point in trying to make any kind of bridge for the project. All he was doing was opening himself up to attack, and it wasn’t like he got any points for trying to be reasonable if Rose really wasn’t interested in it.
Yet, Derrick bit his nerves down and shook his head. “Actually Weasley,” he said, which came out a lot hotter than he intended, but rather than fumble he tried to force his way forward. “That wasn’t what I was trying to say.” He said, and his arms folded a little defensively.
“Look…In the first place we’re here to care for the project.” He said dropping his arms to gesture around. “If we’re spending all of our time at each other’s throats or near it, we’re not being very good caretakers, and…well…They didn’t do anything to deserve being swept into our business.” He explained. Once more just forcing the words out of his mouth, they tumbled quickly and might have been hard to follow with how quickly he had said them.
“And I don’t know about you, but I don’t often like to settle for passing,” he continued on. Passing was preferable over failure, but Derrick didn’t like to settle for mediocrity if something better was possible. Frankly between the two of them something better should all be but be assured. They were both good students, maybe one was a more serious than the other, but that was besides the point.
“So…” He got to the point for the second time and shrugged uncomfortably before lifting his hand up to rose. “Perhaps we can try, at least here letting everything else to the side and..” He paused again. “Truce?”
It sounded silly, was he just trying to make it sound nicer than she did? But to Derrick’s ears it seemed like a better goal. A truce wasn’t supposed to just be gathering ammunition to swing again was it? He believed it was a concentrated effort to being if not friendly, decent. To be able to talk, and communicate, and look at each other not as rivals but as…Well for lack of a better term in this situation partners. Yet again though it felt to him like he as simply opening himself to free shots and he hated it. If he were back home and tried it, he’d just be laughed at for trying. Why should Rose Weasley be any different?

Rose’s hand slowly dropped as Derrick finally found his words, proposing more than just a tense collaboration for the sake of a passing grade. Instead, he seemed to genuinely care for the end result of the project, in regards to both the creatures under their care as well as their final grade. She knew he was actually a good student, and so his quest for a good grade was not surprising. She was a bit more surprised that his first concern seemed to be not letting their personal feelings affect the magical creatures involved. She would not have pinned him as one to care for innocent beings like them. To be frank, she had assumed he had simply taken the course as an easy O.
Pursing her lips, eyes searching him for any signs of deceit, she considered his offer of a truce. Even if just temporary, it may be nice to not be completely on edge around the boy while working on their assignment. Perhaps Don was right and he wasn’t as bad as his initial impression on her. “I mean, that’s pretty much what I said,” she retorted snarkily, although her bite was mitigated by the teasing smile growing on her lips. With one last tentative look, she grasped his hand in her own in agreement. “But fine, truce.” She shook his hand a bit more forcefully than she usually would, hoping to instill a bit of fear in the boy if he were to cross her, eyes locked on his and refusing to be the first to let go.
“Alright,” she finally said when their little showdown was complete, and their agreement in place. “Should we get to work now?” She began leisurely making her way towards the pens holding a variety of magical creatures, glancing back to make sure Derrick was following behind her. Their task was to care for the Puffskeins, Kneazles, and Crups currently being studied by the class, documenting the creatures’ behaviours and their experience caring for the creatures. Each team had been given one specific week to complete the assignment, their final essay being due the following week to allow time for editing. Rose had been looking forward to the assignment itself, just not her work partner, so now that the annoyance seemed to have been dealt with, her good mood had returned. “Which do you want to start with?” She asked Derrick in a show of collaboration, motioning towards the three pens.

Derrick studied Rose intently as her hand dropped, bracing himself for any backlash. He was ready for her to reject it; if it had been various members of the Balor Family, they certainly would have laughed in his face or feigned a truce only to wait for the first opportunity to make a fool out of him. Derrick didn't trust Rose, and so his survival instincts were bubbling at the surface. However, Derrick was determined not to be the catalyst for everything falling apart. He tolerated his family; he could tolerate anything. Rose was no Balor for all her pranks and all their hostility; for that reason alone, he believed a truce could be possible.
Rather than making a face at her response, he forced it into a head tilt as he considered it. He was sure she hadn't said what he had said. Wasn't her suggestion that they barely tolerate each other enough to succeed and then get as far away from each other as possible? He thought that was what she meant. But then she agreed, and there was no reason to argue the point until one of them made a reason for it, which Derrick was determined not to start. He shook her hand, and he became less tense. He hadn't truly realized he'd been so tense to start, but he exhaled and nodded.
"Yes, let's," he said, and he followed her towards the pens, working to understand what would be a comfortable distance. He couldn't be too far away, as he might feel comfortable, because that would give the impression he needed a lot of distance from her. But too close wouldn't be much better either. He'd settle for an awkward pace of a few feet away from her.
"Let's start with the crups; they're apt to give us the most trouble if there is any to be had today." He said, turning his eyes towards the dog-like creatures.
He eyed them a little warily; he hadn't encountered much trouble with the crops here. However, his aunt Victoria (on his stepmother's side) had one that was particularly nasty towards him. Probably it was because his aunt was hostile, and Mago was only following her queue. His aunt had explained it was because it could smell the squib in him, which Derrick now knew was rubbish. Yet whenever he saw one, he'd think of Mago and brace himself. Was it possible that they'd behaved themselves only because their professor had been around?
He tensely moved towards the pen, cautiously watching the crups approach. "I'm honestly surprised they haven't chewed through their pens, my aunt's crup once chewed a hole straight through the pantry door to get at the food inside." He said, looking into the pen and cautiously extending his hand for them to smell. He did so slowly and rigidly, as if he was ready to jump back when one of them moved to take a bite out of him.
"Does your family keep any?" Derrick asked, not turning his eyes away from the pen as he asked. They weren't exactly creatures you could just adopt on a whim, but he imagined The Weasley Family probably were respectable enough that they wouldn't have too much resistance.

Rose nodded to Derrick’s suggestion and moved closer to the pen of crups, all barking and clamoring closer for attention. They truly did resemble normal dogs, other than the forked tail. Although it would be a nightmare if a crup were to be adopted by a muggle family, given their aggressive nature towards non-magical people.
Rose noticed Derrick seemed a bit apprehensive approaching the pen of excitable pups, his body tense as he outstretched a hand to let them get his scent first. He seemed particularly worried about them escaping from their pen, even commenting on them potentially causing some trouble for the pair. Rose wasn’t sure if she agreed. After all, the kneazles were particularly intelligent. If any creature were to find a way to escape their pen, she would bet on them. “I’m sure they have some protective charms on the pens to keep them contained,” she commented, hoping to alleviate some of his concerns. He seemed to have some personal experience with these creatures, which may have explained his timid nature when approaching them.
Despite their typical animosity, Rose felt bad for the Slytherin and his obvious fear of the creatures, and so decided to take the lead on their care for the length of their assignment. She wouldn’t necessarily tell him - she had a feeling he would not accept the help if she did - but she was sure he would not object if she were to delegate the other responsibilities to him instead. “No. We had a few cats, some kneazles, but no crups. Or dogs. Too much work for my parents I’d guess.” That was an understatement. Not even taking into account the fact that half her family had to go into hiding during her childhood, her parents were much too busy with their careers and their brood of children to care for additional animals.
“So your aunt had one?” She asked, trying to keep the conversation going as she followed his lead and let the crups smell her hand. Only upon getting their approval did she let herself into the pen, making sure not to let any out. The crups began jumping up on her, tails wagging, excited for the new company in their home, causing her to laugh as she tried to give each of them the attention they craved. “Did your family have many pets growing up?”
