Alys sat cross-legged on the cold, stone floor outside the Charms classroom, her wand idly twirling between her fingers. She had a habit of arriving early to avoid the maze-like corridors of Hogwarts, which had a knack for leading her astray. An hour early this time—she shook her head with a wry smile, knowing it was a bit excessive. But better this than getting lost and facing Professor Channing's disappointed gaze.
She pulled out her Charms textbook, "The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 1," and flipped through the pages. Her mind, however, wandered to the bustling Great Hall, where breakfast was likely still in full swing. She imagined her classmates, their laughter echoing off the enchanted ceiling, and felt a pang of longing. Her stomach growled in protest, reminding her that she had skipped breakfast in her haste. A choice that may come into consequence later because Alys had always—with her cursed DNA—been warned to pay extra attention to her health.
The corridor was quiet, save for the distant chatter of students and the occasional flicker of torchlight. Alys glanced at her watch—still fifty-five minutes to go. She sighed, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear, and resolved to make the most of the solitude. With a flick of her wand, she began practicing the Summoning Charm, muttering "Accio" under her breath as she aimed at a small piece of parchment that had fallen from her bag.

Alderic despite not being a morning person sorta, well sorta because on vacations at home you can find him sleeping in till noon; however when he was at school he had to wake up on time since he had to get on time for his classes. Alderic walked to the Charms class as it was something he had to get to. He looked around and could see a girl sitting there who looked similar to his age. Was she a first year? Or was he misjudging her age? He was not going to think much about it, as he moved his hair behind his ear.
A smile draped on his face and a cheese sandwich wrapped in a tissue in his hand- which had a few bites taken from it, as he was eating it while walking up the stairs. He looked at the girl again, pulling himself out of his own thoughts. He could see had a book out. He walked closer to her as she did a spell to summon something from the bag. "Hi" He said shyly to her. "I always thought you had say the name of the object you want to summon." He mumbled not aiming the comment to anyone in particular. "I am Alderic" Alderic said shyly, turning his face away from her for a while. He was sure a blush would be on his face.

Alys glanced up from her book, her wand pausing mid-air as she locked eyes with Alderic. The flicker of curiosity in her gaze softened as she noticed his shy demeanor and the hint of a blush creeping onto his cheeks. A small, reassuring smile tugged at her lips.
"Hi there," she responded warmly, setting her wand down on the open page of her textbook. "You’re right, usually it helps to name the object, I was just practicing the incantation for now." Her eyes flickered to the half-eaten cheese sandwich in his hand, and she couldn't help but grin. "Looks like you brought breakfast with you."
She shifted slightly, making room on the stone floor beside her. "I’m Alys, by the way. I came early to avoid getting lost again. These corridors have a mind of their own, I swear." She chuckled softly, trying to put him at ease. The corridor seemed less lonely now, with Alderic's presence adding a comforting warmth to the otherwise chilly space.

Alderic looked at her as he waited for her to look at him. He was hoping that he was not intruding into her private space. But well since it was a common area; he hoped that she would be fine. His blush crept sooner than he had expected. He looked at her and smiled back at her.
"Hey!" he said smiling hoping he was not being too much. "Um… I didn’t mean to question you about it. I swear!" He said a little nervously. "I was just stating a fact. I am sorry if I offended you." He said apologizing. He didn’t want her to think he was trying to show her off or something. "Um.. Yeah I did. Do you want some? I have an untouched triangle with me" He said taking out the other half of the sandwich he was eating, which was uneaten and untouched.
Alderic took a seat beside her and smiled. "Hi Alys. Nice to meet you." He said looking at her. "Yeah I get that. I am usually late to classes because of them and I can’t seem to find my way back at times" He said softly. He was feeling good about meeting Alys. "I am in Ravenclaw what house are you in?" He asked.

Alys's smile widened as Alderic spoke, his nervousness endearing in its own way. "No offense taken at all, Alderic," she reassured him, waving off his concern with a flick of her hand. "It's nice to have someone to chat with while waiting for class."
Her eyes sparkled with genuine appreciation as he offered the untouched half of his sandwich. "That's really kind of you. Thank you," she said, accepting it with a nod of gratitude. She took a small bite, savoring the simple yet satisfying taste. "Better than the breakfast I missed," she added with a chuckle.
As Alderic settled beside her, Alys felt the warmth of companionship fill the previously quiet corridor. "Nice to meet you too," she responded, adjusting her position to face him better. "I'm in Gryffindor. I guess that makes us neighbors in the tower."
She nodded in agreement with his comment about getting lost. "Hogwarts is like a living maze sometimes. I swear the staircases change just to mess with us." She laughed softly, her eyes twinkling with shared understanding.

Alderic took a huge sigh of relief when he heard that he had not offended Alys. He didn’t want to offend anyone at all. He smiled back to her. "I am happy to know that you are not offended." He said wiping his hand on his brow. He looked at her and nodded his head. "Yeah I agree with you on that." He said.
Alderic looked at her and smiled as she took the sandwich. "You are welcome." He said. He was happy that he had something he could offer Alys. "I guess yeah!" He said a little unsurely.
Alderic turned to see Alys who was sitting next to him. He could see her adjusting so they were better positioned to see each other properly. He was happy to be here and not be late to classes. He would have hated being late. "Yeah I think it will make us neighbors. That's really interesting." He said with excitement.
He was happy that what he was saying was something Alys was agreeing to. He looked at her and smiled. "Yeah I can relate and I think it does. Maybe after class we can go around the castle?" He asked hoping that she would wanna do what he was suggesting.

Alys's smile widened, her eyes sparkling with excitement at Alderic's suggestion. "That sounds like a brilliant idea," she replied eagerly. "Exploring the castle together might actually help us get a better sense of direction. Plus, it’s always more fun with company."
She took another small bite of the sandwich, enjoying the impromptu breakfast and the unexpected companionship. "So, what do you like about Charms?" she asked, curious to learn more about her new friend. "For me, it’s the way magic feels so alive in Charms. Like you can almost see the spells dancing in the air." Alys adjusted her wand in her hand, feeling more at ease with Alderic beside her. The corridor seemed less daunting now.

Alderic smiled as he saw Alys smiling at his suggestion. He couldn’t wait to roam around the castle. He was eager to see the place. "I am glad you think so Alys." He said smiling. "Yeah. I thought so too. Being with a friend would be really exciting." He said looking at her. He glanced at a student who came running through the corridor where he and Alys were sitting. Pointing their wand at Alderic and screaming Alohomora. Alderic was a little astonished but didn't say anything about it as the spell didn't hit him and that student had run off in the other direction.
Alderic was glad that he had a triangle of sandwich which he was able to give Alys. He took a bite of his sandwich and smiled. "I like the ability to do magic and protect myself." He said. "Not only protect myself but also do other things like see in the dark." He said fumbling a little. He took out a tissue from his pocket and put on the ground and took out his wand and cast a spell. "Wingadium Leviosa" He smiled as the tissue started to float in the air. "Oh yeah magic does do that." He said as he brought the tissue back down to the ground. "What other subject do you like? I love Defense Against the Dark Arts."

Alys watched with wide-eyed amazement as the tissue floated gracefully into the air. "Nicely done, Alderic!" she exclaimed, genuinely impressed. She considered his question for a moment, her mind running through the various classes at Hogwarts. "Defense Against the Dark Arts is definitely one of my favorites too," she said, nodding in agreement. "There's something thrilling about learning how to defend ourselves against dark magic."
Alys leaned back slightly, her eyes reflecting a mix of curiosity and excitement. "I also enjoy Transfiguration, even though it's a bit tricky. Turning objects into other things feels like the pinnacle of magic to me. What about you? Any subjects you're not too fond of?" As she spoke, the corridor started to fill with more students, signaling that the start of class was drawing nearer. She noticed a few curious glances directed their way, perhaps intrigued by their early arrival and the floating tissue. Ignoring them, she turned her full attention back to Alderic.
"And speaking of spells, I think practicing together could be really beneficial," she continued with a smile. "We could even try combining spells or creating new charms. Imagine the possibilities!"

Alderic smiled as he looked at Alys looking at him with amazement. He looked a little flushed as he heard what she was saying. "Thank you Alys." He said. He was not trying to show off- though he didn’t need to. He was after all repeating the year and he knew how to do these spells better than any other first year. "That is great. I feel Defense Against the Dark Arts teaches you how to defend ourselves and keep us safe." He explained. "I- um… Not that Charms didn’t do the same thing." He added biting his own lips. "I agree!!" He added.
"Well I find Transfiguration interesting but yeah it is very tricky. One mistake and you can get a completely different result." He said. He thought for a while and then said "I don’t like Herbology." He bit his lips. He was hoping that he didn’t offend her. He glanced at the students who had started arriving. He was pretty excited that the class was about to start. Despite feeling eager for the class he didn’t want this meeting to come to an end.
"For sure!" Alderic said excitedly. "Yeah. And we can get in some trouble as well too." Alderic smiled. "Well not trouble that would cause us harm but some harmless trouble." He said looking at her. "This has been really nice." He said hoping that she’d catch that he didn’t want this to end.

Something about Alderic made Alys feel a surge of warmth. She felt that about many people, though. Perhaps it was a hidden talent embraided by her lineage's ill fate. Her eyes began to sparkle as she started to speak to him, "Defense Against the Dark Arts is entirely necessary, given the nature of the subject. There's so much evil out there. Which is why knowing our Charms is important too!" The enthusiasm off of Alys could be bouncing.
"Well I find Transfiguration interesting but yeah it is very tricky. One mistake and you can get a completely different result." Her lips curved into a smile. An opportunity to embarrass her cousins. "One time my cousin turned a teapot into a rotten pineapple. The smell was so bad that the entire class had to evacuate." She felt no offense at the mention of Herbology. "It's okay, Herbology can be a bit earthy so I get why people don't like it." A bit of solemn air filled her as she recounted the many times Herbology had been used to mend a family member's illness when it could be possible. But, she didn't let that linger. Optimistic, Alys, she reminded herself.
More and more students were beginning to fill the corridor with the same idea, to wait for class to begin. Breakfast must've been over by now. She thought longingly about the pancakes she could have had today if she had been better organized to know where this class even was. Her eyes twinkled when she looked at Alderic once more, "You're really fun to speak to." and then, a lower tone, "We can totally get into some trouble."
