Date: early October 2025 Tag: 4-7 Herbology Ooc: as I am dealing with a RL crisis, I will not have time to regularly check in so please keep that in mind and be kind, Ty <3 also this was written on mobile in a hospital room so sorry for any typos xD
Nathaniel waited for the class to settle down before launching into that days lesson. Most students would have planted baby mandrakes at the beginning of their school careers unless they were transfers and hadn’t done so at their old school. It was a lesson he usually did with his first and second years. Sometimes his third years. It depended really.
They would be revisiting the topic today in the form of rambunctious, teenage mandrakes. Whose behaviour wasn’t that far off from the students who were often a lively bunch, he personally thought.
”Today, we will be repotting teenage mandrakes which is trickier to do than dealing with baby mandrakes. They are still not considered mature yet so their screams are not yet fatal. But they do pack a bigger punch than a baby mandrakes screams so remember to wear the earmuffs I have provided for you once we begin the practical part of our lesson.” The earmuffs had been especially enchanted by him to be even more effective against a mandrakes screams. He had dealt with too many a fainter in his years as a Herbology professor.
”Part of what informs a person that mandrakes are have reached teenhood and may need a bigger pot is if they throw parties or if they have acne. A sign of a mandrake being at full maturity - where their screams will cause fatalities - is if they try moving into one another’s pots but thankfully, that has not happened with this batch so we need only wear the earmuffs.”
He waited for anyone writing down notes to finish doing so. ”Now, teenage mandrakes are much moodier than younger mandrakes. If you don’t have their soil just right, they will sulk and get moody. They will also struggle more than the baby mandrakes but otherwise repotting them is quite similar. You pull them up by their leaves, quickly plop them into the new pot and get the new soil wrapped around them like a nice, fleece blanket.”
He waited for everyone to be caught up if they were the type to note-take or need extra time to fully process information. ”Now if there are no questions, earmuffs on and let’s begin.”

Having repotted baby Mandrakes several times before, Maeve wasn't looking forward to working with a bigger, feistier version of the plant. Since Professor Schultz warned them to prepare the soil correctly, she intended to take her time with it. Emotionally, it didn't matter to her if her Mandrake sulked or even wilted away; however, such an outcome would affect her grade negatively.
She donned her earmuffs and a pair of dragon-hide gloves, then drew a large pot closer. The plant required loose, deep, and well-drained soil - despite being part of magical botany, Mandrakes were as susceptible to rot as any mundane plant. Maeve began filling up the pot, careful not to let the dirt become too tightly packed.

Repotting mandrakes was always a pleasant thing to do. That is, if you consider the screaming, pain and torture of repotting a baby mandrake an interesting concept to play around especially with baby mandrakes. However, some people such as Levi knew that replanting teenage mandrakes were quite problematic. He did pay attention to the professor when a sudden thought popped into his mind before he glanced at Maeve.
...Mandrakes can be used to cure petrification.... He quickly locked his eyes back to the Professor as he took note of what they had said donning his own ear protection before looking at the task ahead. He didn't exactly know where to start but began by grasping the leaves at the top thinking it was the correct way to do this considering it had been some time since he had to repot a mandrake.
"Erm...Professor, how do you know if they have acne? I mean...they're all lumpy and potato-like already." Gavyn had never seen a teenage Mandrake and hadn't really been able to tell the difference from the textbook images either. Sure it might be easy to know if they were maturing if they did the whole partying thing but its not like he watched the plants all the time. Did that mean they would have to check for the acne and how did they know what one was? Were they squishy? That would be gross. He got acne from time to time but he had great products that usually took care of the problem quickly. "We don't have to touch the acne to be sure right?"

The full moon was on the seventh, that was the only thought in his head as he used his quill to carve into his textbook cover. Teenaged Mandrakes didn't sound like something he wanted to deal with right now given his headache. But he was hardly going to be allowed to not participate. Yanking a bigger pot close to him he filled it with the available soil and hoped it would be good enough, plants really shouldn't be so picky. Dirt was dirt.
Once he had the pot ready he picked up a pair of earmuffs, made sure they were snug over both ears, and yanked on his dragonhide gloves. Whether his soil was loose or packed was, well, he had no idea if it was he hadn't really checked. Instead of doing that, he went about the next step. Grabbing the teenaged Mandrake, yanking it up as hard as he could to pull it out of the old pot. Being a scrawny kid it took a lot of strength but he managed it after a moment. Plopping it into the hole he'd left he began scooping dirt in around it.

Calvin had never even heard of a Mandrake till now. The thought of pulling out a teenager from their bed and placing them into a new one was rather interesting. Watching from what one of the other students did, he followed exactly what he said but forgetting a key step. Putting on ear protection.
He grasped the Mandrake and pulled it out and hearing the scream causing Calvin to drop the Mandrake on the floor as he covered his ears and quickly went to put his ear protection on. Clenching his teeth, he bent down once his ear protection was on and picked up the screaming mandrake before placing it into a new pot of soil.
" SORRY!" He screamed out hoping the screaming mandrake would soon stop crying.

Once the soil was suitably prepared, Maeve pushed most of it to the sides of the pot to create a hole in the center. The next part was the most unpleasant; she would have to pull up the Mandrake and endure its repulsive visage and the ear-piercing screams that were still audible even through the earmuffs. Best to hurry up and be done with it.
Grabbing the plant firmly by the leaves with her right hand, she yanked upward while holding the pot down with her left one. Sure enough, the beastly root immediately started yowling in distress; the seventh-year unceremoniously shoved it down into its new home and quickly poured a few handfuls of soil over it to fully cover it. Others were also handling their Mandrakes, which meant the sound of their cries was constant - and getting louder every time a new one was pulled up. Wouldn't the Silencing Charm work on the plant? Perhaps not; if it did, Professor Schultz wouldn't be making them all develop a headache during a Mandrake repotting lesson.
Herbology happened to be his weakest subject and the one he least enjoyed the most at Hogwarts. There was just something about dealing with magical plants that gave him the ick. Today was no exception with having to deal with potato looking things. To make it worse, the Mandrakes were teenagers which only meant they were more problematic. Taking note of the instructions provided to him, Henri pulled the teenage mandrake out before placing it into a new pot. He covered it with soil before looking over at his fellow class mates.

Julian had never seen a mandrake in his life, which definitely accounted for the absolute look of disgust on his face as he observed the pot before him. Beauxbaton had never allowed such an ugly monstrosity into their school, let alone force their students to tangle with it and call it a lesson. He continued to stare as the leaves (hair?) of the mandrake twitched a little above the soil.
Unfortunately any healing prospects in his future required the Slytherin to perform well in Herbology - and Julian understood the necessity of getting decent grades in this particular class - so, without much more delay, he donned the provided black earmuffs and dragonhide gloves and prepared for the worst. A chorus of screams arose around the herbology classroom as other students began to repot their little plant fiends, and Julian grimaced, still hearing the screams even with the earmuffs tightly positioned over his ears. Making sure to prepare the larger pot, Julian scooped the soil to pack it around the curved edges of the pot first, creating a hole to place the teenage mandrake in. Once he had done that he set himself in-front of the smaller pot, glancing upwards only when he heard shouts. It was Klein - his mandrake rolling a little on the floor helplessly - screeching. Julian watched the chaos unfold for a few seconds before deciding it was now or never.
Taking hold of the leaves (again, hair?) of the mandrake, Julian breathed in, giving it a hard yank to free it from its cozy home. Cue the screaming. "Eurgh," it had come free in one go, its little twiggy arms beating around as it cried, heavier than he had expected. Julian hastily moved it to its new pot, shoving it down into the prepared soil, beginning to pile more dirt on top.

As the continuous screech echoed around the greenhouse, Maeve took off her thick gloves and retrieved her watch pendant to check the time. There was still plenty of it left for this class. To discourage the professor from suggesting that she should repot one more plant, she slipped the gloves back on and busied herself with evening out the soil her Mandrake was currently resting it. There probably was no need for it to be so aesthetic but she had to pass the time somehow.

Jarod walked in with the other students and sat somewhere on his own. Then once the class started he listened to the Professor and wrote it all down in order to remember the information. Jarod looked around and then he glanced at the teenage Mandrakes. He sigheed as he put the earmuffs on and gloves before he did anything, to be on the safe side. Then he glanced around and sighed. Jarod got a pot as he put soil in it and then created a hole and then got ready to pull the teenage mandrake from it's pot to a new one but froze. For some reason he couldn't do it. Jarod panicked but didn't scream or such, just backed away slightly and just watched. He wasn't sure that he could do it even if he needed a good grade in the subject to pass. Jarod glanced around and sighed as he tried again. He heard the other mandrakes scream and scritch even with the earmuffs and sighed to that. He tried to convince himself that he could do it but with no results as he looked down to the ground, as he was truly upset with himself. Jarod backed away as he took a deep breath and tried again. It happened 10 times before he took another deep breath and pulled the teenager mandrake by the leave and carefully yanked it out as it gave such a scream that Jarod flinched at that. The mandrake screamed and tried to free itself as well as scritched as he just watched that. Then Jarod quickly repotted the mandrake and put it in it's new pot, it's new home. Then he took a toop and addes extra soil to cover the pot a bit more and cover the mandrake. After that, Jarod just watched and sighed to that. Jarod was proud of himself as he hoped that he did it right, yet he believed that he did.

Riko walked into the greenhouse and saw that some of the students had already arrived for class. She found a spot, put her bag down, and waited for the professor to start the class. After a few minutes, the professor began speaking. He announced that they would be repotting teenage mandrakes, a topic Riko remembered reading about. After the professor finished speaking, Riko put on her earmuffs and made sure they were tightly secured on her ears. She then took hold of her mandrake, pulled it straight out of the pot, and started to move around, knowing it would be screaming. Riko carefully placed it into the new pot, covered it up with soil, and looked around at everyone else.
