Just over a week had passed since Maeve was forced to show Octavian her version of the Room. Since then, she had visited it twice and found it occupied by the unwelcome guest both times. Her first attempt at showing him she did not want him here was by leaving immediately, which proved to have no effect. The second time, she ignored him and focused on brewing a potion which, upon completion, had filled the room with odorous fumes. Even that did not drive him out. She would have to be more direct now.
"You know, you can take one book at a time and read it anywhere. Design a fake cover with a dull title for it, nobody will check." She had read a few of those tomes in that manner herself. However, she suspected his purpose here was simply to spite her.

Octavian sat on the comfortable chair, one he had essentially brought into the room, near the desk with one of Maeve's personal volumes in hand.
He absently glanced up, an eyebrow raised.
"I could, yes," he said with a smile, as he continued to read and barely acknowledged her there. "However, there would be an undue risk, for no real reason, as this space serves both purpose and as safety."
Octavian looked over the book at her, a glint in the eye...

"The risk is minuscule, and you would be able to read much more if you had a book with you everywhere. Coming all the way to the seventh floor wastes an awful lot of time. Time during which you could read, say, twenty pages?" She knew she wasn't getting anywhere; it was almost certain that his secondary purpose was to make sure she didn't get to practise Dark Arts anymore. All she had left now was Hogwarts-approved spells - and those she could do at the dueling tower. "But have it your way."
The redhead walked off, whipping out her wand as she moved. She selected the dummy closest to the sixth year's seat - still far away so no stray spells could hit him, yet close enough to cause disturbance with every blast. "Confringo." An orange light collided with the target, blasting one of its limbs into pieces.

Octavian kept the curt smile on his face, as Maeve tried to offer suggestive reasoning. It didn't work. Nothing she could say would, in the end, as he had reason to be present and in the sequestered room. He wanted to keep an eye on Maeve, he wanted to see how long it took before she indulged in Dark Arts, which would prove him correct; and then, by extension, he would have another string to puppet her with.
"I am quite--"
The Confringo explosion sent a wave of warmth and some small bits of dummy debris around Octavian, who flinched and turned aside.
"--comfortable, thank you. Good casting, as one might expect of a dueling club leader."
With a clear of his throat, Octavian reached up and brushed off his shoulder with a hand, before he resumed reading at a quick pace...

Maeve did not take her eyes away from the target. This was the closest to Dark Arts she dared to get in the present company - the Blasting Curse was a curse, after all, but one Hogwarts tolerated. "I appreciate the feedback." Another addition to the numerous lies already shared with him.
"However, I had expected a more impressive result from this spell. I believe I need to keep practising. Confringo." More shards and splinters flew everywhere as the dummy lost most of its shoulder. "Confringo." The faceless head exploded next. "I hope you don't mind the slight disturbance. Confringo." Another arm was noisily converted into debris.

Octavian flicked another page across, as the Confringo blasts continued to erupt nearby. It was obvious that Maeve was trying to agitate, to push for some kind of reaction, though the older Slytherin kept to the chair and continued to scan the pages before him. He did add, however:
"It seems to me that your use of the spell is suitably acceptable."
Octavian offered a smile over the page top.
Boom.
Octavian cleared his throat.
Boom.
Octavian fixed the page that had been blown askew.
Boom!
Octavian reached up and smoothed his misplaced hair back to neatness.
"Far be it for me to advise such a skilled duellist, but perhaps you are mistaking intent for anger? And no, I do not mind the middling bother, please continue if you so wish."

"Suitably acceptable is not good enough." That even sounded like the minimum passing grade - Acceptable. She always aimed for Outstanding.
From the corner of her eye, she could see the older boy was not particularly comfortable - she wouldn't have been, either, with dangerous spells being cast so close by a person who was furious with her. "Anger leads to intent in most cases, it is the easiest emotion to channel into such spells." She should know, she always turned to anger when she was feeling upset. It was an empowering emotion that motivated her to do better, while sadness only served to subdue and never successfully powered any magic. "Anger and hatred, that is. Confringo." The torso of the dummy exploded, leaving her without a target.

"Perhaps not for overachievers," Octavian said with a shrug, as he turned the page. "Yet, there could be argument made that a suitably acceptable Confringo could end a duel as easily as any masterful one."
Perhaps that would boil Maeve's patience a bit, to undermine her clear efforts to excel in most aspects at Hogwarts.
"Anger, hm?" Octavian muttered, as he glanced over to the other. "So you strive to utilize the easiest emotional response in your casting? That you give in to your anger and risk becoming unpredictable, unfocused and unreliable in a situation? Far be it for me to advise such an outstanding duellist, but I feel anger and hate are a crutch to real casting prowess."
Octavian raised his eyebrows.
"Essentially, you are admitting to being little more than an incensed child screaming at others with magic."

While Corvus lectured her on emotion control and casting, she waved her wand to direct another dummy into the spot its predecessor had occupied. He truly was full of himself - telling her anger was not the most efficient fuel for Dark Arts, while he could barely pull off a hex...
"I did not say I give in to anger or hatred every single time I feel them. Believe me, you would know if I had such a tendency. I merely harness them for their power." She looked at him, feigning a midly appalled expression. "Or do you mean to say that I should strive to cast such spells without any negative emotion, purely for the pleasure of causing harm? Is that how you do it?"

Octavian adjusted himself in the seat, as Maeve responded, her words underlined with threat. There was clearly agitation at his presence in her space, which was what part of the intent had been, though learning a little more about the other Slytherin - through such discussion, antagonistic as it was - was another boon. Octavian listened, expression neutral, before he glanced back down to the book and continued reading.
"I would not know about what to channel for such spells you might be referring to, Maeve," Octavian licked the end of his finger and turned the page edge. "You are the one experimenting with Dark Arts, if you might recall."
Octavian paused for a moment.
"However, in theory, one does not necessarily need to hate or take pleasure in causation of harm. Intent could be focused and emotionless, a manifestation of determination and willpower - rather than angry feelings or inclinations."

"Yes, and you are merely reading all these books about Dark Arts, with no intention of ever applying or even testing that information." He would try out some of those spells and potions at home over the summer, she was certain.
"Many things are possible in theory. Whether they are effective and efficient in practice is an entirely different matter. Confringo." The new dummy's head exploded into a shower of splinters. "Or do you wish to demonstrate how a curse cast with no emotion can produce the same effect as one fueled by anger?"
Post by OCTAVIAN CORVUS on Sept 10, 2023 3:04:32 GMT -5
"Well, I am in Dark Arts Theory," Octavian said with a smirk, before he continued to read. "And I enjoy the pursuit of information, yes. Knowledge is power."
That was a small insight into Octavian for Maeve, should she choose to see it.
Boom!
Octavian watched as the dummy's head exploded. Maeve certainly held a lot of anger, focusing it into those spells of hers. Yet, with her response, there was clearly a challenge - or at least an opportunity.
"Shall we test the theory?" Octavian asked as he stood and closed the book. He placed it on the desk, then walked over to the other, his wand in hand. "Now seems as good a time as any."
The Slytherin aimed the wand and spoke - "Confringo." - as a blast fired at the headless dummy... though, the result was less explosive or forceful than Maeve's efforts.

She gave him a measuring look. Was knowledge all he sought? Odd that he ended up in Slytherin, then. "Knowledge is power, I concur. But power is also power, and there is only so much unapplied knowledge can give you. Why not seek both?"
Maeve stepped aside as the older boy accepted her challenge. The steely blue gaze flashed with amusement at his spellwork. "That is an apt representation of how much one can achieve with knowledge alone-- Confringo." Half of the wooden torso and an entire right arm exploded. "--compared to knowledge and power, combined."
Post by OCTAVIAN CORVUS on Sept 10, 2023 4:39:55 GMT -5
"That may be true, yes," Octavian met Maeve's gaze, as he responded about seeking both power and knowledge. "However, I seek knowledge, as I mentioned... and my power will benefit even more with the control I gain from what I learn and understand in current pursuits."
The older Slytherin had goals, of course, and he had worked very hard to reach them. He had overcome several while at Hogwarts, and he would continue to do so after. Yet, for now, he would face whatever scrutiny Maeve sent his way, for the sake of plans within plans.
"You can explode things, I cannot disagree," Octavian said in a low voice, as he looked at the dummy. "I wonder if that is enough, to throw raw power? And what of your control, fueled by anger, and arguably unbridled - what improvement can be made from that approach?"
Post by MAEVE THORNE on Sept 10, 2023 5:20:48 GMT -5
"You keep speaking as though one can only choose knowledge or power, not both. If you are under the impression that I do not seek knowledge, you have learned nothing about me." She was the first to read the books he was currently perusing, after all.
There was so much more Maeve could do than simply 'explode things', but it was not something she could bring up. "I merely apply some types of the knowledge at once instead of storing it all for later use. And why does it bother you so much that I channel anger into certain spells? Being able to channel it when needed means I control it, and thus it can be utilized for improvement. Confringo." Not to mention how much better off certain people were when she had an outled for her fury.
