The Ravenclaw common room wasn't exactly the most positive environment to be right now with exams happening left right and centre. The mere tension of the common room made it difficult when nearly ninety percent of the house were in the dorm studying while the other ten percent were in other areas of Hogwarts studying. All in all, it felt like everyone was just in study mode. Everyone but Calvin of course who seemed to be entertaining himself with a textbook on Muggle Studies.
" Muggles aren't allowed to see magic. " He whispered laughing slightly at the comment. Having come from an area that somewhat segregated magical lifestyle from the muggle world, it was interesting to learn how much the wizarding community here feared the exposure of their magical world. He shook his head as continued to read through his textbook at the comments made about Muggles.
He glanced up every now and then to see if there was anyone he knew around him. It happened to be his third glance where he noticed Kristian in the Court Yard. The two were friendly toward each other having not only shared the same Ravenclaw attire but also because they both took Muggle Studies. Waving his arm, he smiled and gestured the boy to come over and join him.

To say the least, Kristian was... stressed. While there were times his focus (read: obsession) on certain topics worked in his favor, it seemed that for this year in particular, he was getting kicked in the arse. His grades for History and Muggle Studies were severely lacking. Although he was confident in passing, just getting by like that wasn't enough. Especially when it came to Muggle Studies; he was too sure of his knowledge in the subject and flunked quizzes he really shouldn't have.
Perhaps if he hadn't allowed himself to fall deep into his studies for Potions or COMC, his marks would be more rounded out. Not to mention his growing interest in wandless magic sucking away his free time... plus all the clubs he was apart of... Basically, there were numerous other things floating around in his mind. And so, Kristian found himself sauntering towards the Ravenclaw tower, fully intending to cram until his brain gave out.
It was during this walk that he caught it within the corner of his eye: a bright smile, dirty blonde hair, and a hand raised high up that was waving back and forth. Oh. That was Calvin, wasn't it?
Kristian blinked up towards the older, brows raised in slight disbelief at the invitation. Then, he pondered for a moment. Regardless of his own social habits, Calvin had always been kind and warm, leaving him with no actual reason to turn down his peer. Besides, mingling with others could lead to developing proper friendships, and he didn't have a lot of those. He could at least try.
Decision set in stone, the young wizard steeled his nerves and closed the distance between them before long. Once he was face-to-face with Calvin, he offered a nod of acknowledgement as he settled into a nearby seat.
"Um, hi," he greeted lamely, pausing to sort his thoughts, "What are you up to?"

Forming friendships had been one of the easiest things for Calvin. Perhaps it was the fact he was quite charismatic or the fact that he didn't really care too much for what other people thought. Calvin was just Calvin. He was friendly to almost everyone. Of course, if you got on his bad books, you would stay there. He did hold grudges. However, he didn't have a grudge against Kristian. A fellow Ravenclaw.
" Hey man!" He greeted as he lowered his book folding the corner of his textbook. " Just having a laugh really. " He said as he shrugged his shoulders. Muggle studies was always an interesting subject for purebloods to be enrolled in. The fact that the subject boasts so highly about interaction and hiding their magical world was amusing.
" It's just something I've read that's keeping me entertained. " he finally responded to his question. " You got any plans? Or did you want to join me in laugh- I mean, studying Muggle Studies? " While Calvin didn't have purist view in life, he did reign from a family that did however, it wasn't all dark wizards and witches. That was just his Uncle. He was the heir to their family fortune which was founded on the basis of blood purism but he didn't think lowly too much of those who weren't pureblood.

At mention of the subject, Kristian's eyes brightened with attention and interest. "Uh, yes! Yes, I would love to," he said, a tiny smile playing on his lips as he leaned to open his knapsack, "That's a big coincidence, actually. It's one of the classes I need to review for the most."
With a bit more pep than before, the boy dropped his notebook onto the table, quickly flipping through the pages until he saw the more recent chapters. However before he could speak another word, his brain stopped in its tracks. Now, Kristian was cautious where socializing was involved. He latched onto far too many anxiety inducing thoughts to be much else. And it was due to this disposition that something occurred to him—what exactly was Calvin?
He was more than aware of the issue on blood purity, knew even half-bloods could act in solidarity, knew that it gave rise to unnecessary tension... or even worse, rash confrontation. But then again, a class centered around muggle society would likely act as purist repellant, no? At least to a certain extent. Still, the young wizard would not place all his eggs into one basket; he'd approach this steadily and remain vigilant. For the sake of his peace of mind.
Sugar quill in one hand and an actual quill in the other, Kristian finally broke his silence. "Which unit are you on? I can help with most of the entertainment section but, um... I'm not very confident on dates and names of people..."

Kristian had responded so quickly it made Calvin jump a little. A smile followed through shortly after his choice of words. " Wow, someone's keen on Muggle Studies." Sure, the subject was entertaining but Calvin found joy in this subject a little different to others. He laughed at the principle of the subject and the textbooks. They were taught to assimilate with the muggle world and somewhat hide their abilities in the muggle world. A concept Calvin really found difficult to understand.
" Oh, I'm just doing some light reading really/ " He said placing a hand on the textbook before opening it up once again. " I've been looking at the different laws associated with our world in regards to the Muggle world. " He flipped to a certain page that talked about political history and in particular Rapports Law. The law was covered in history of magic briefly before his eyes began scanning the book pages.
" I was thinking, imagine if Rapports Law was still in use. Would things be different for us? " When Kristian mentioned dates, Calvin began to prep up like a dog hearing the word squirl. " Oh, I'm quite good with the dates. What era were you struggiling with? " He asked leaning forward only to notice the quills the boy was holding.

The young wizard felt a tad bashful at Calvin's observation, but ultimately did not comment on it. Really, he should have seen it coming. Whenever an interest of his was involved, Kristian could not fight against the surge of energy that quickly followed. When he was in his element, he was in his element.
Consequently, the youth eagerly nodded along to what his peer was saying, each word coloring his imagination. Rappaport's Law, huh? That was certainly a fascinating thought.
Fascinating to the point that once Calvin was talking about dates and the like, Kristian laid down his writing quill and literally waved off the inquiry, even though it was himself that mentioned struggling with said details.
"Rappaport's Law... I'm not sure if that would carry over to the UK, but let's say it did hypothetically spread here and throughout the world even," he mused, not able to stop now that Calvin got his brain started, "Then magic would become a thing of the past, and wizards nearly extinct. You and I? We wouldn't be having this conversation. Maybe not even born. Wizards are just too few in number, and the muggle population too vast for us to not take advantage."
He did not even register the subtle placement of Calvin into a half-blood category, too engrossed in theorizing. With a tilt of his head and a quiet hum, he began to nibble on his sugar quill, "But that brings the question of why, right? Why are we so adamant on such things? What do we gain from being so secretive? Maybe it's a matter of wanting superiority..."
This was perhaps the most Kristian had spoken outside of his classes, much less to another schoolmate, but his mind was too active and his guard effectively crushed to rubble. At that moment, he was simply enjoying himself and hoped Calvin would humor these abstractions.

Though History of Magic wasn’t exactly the most enjoyable subjects at Hogwarts, it seemed he had met someone who had shared a somewhat interest in the subject given how passionate Kris had sounded when explaining his point of view. The boy had some very valid points but perhaps a different view point could also be taken.
“ How do you think it would affect different parts of the world? “ He paused for a second holding onto Kris’s words about how it wouldn’t transpire over to the UK. “ Back in Australia, we have a different lifestyle where everything is segregated, it’s almost imbedded in our lifestyle that blood purity takes control. “ He saved Kris a long detailed explanation and quickly moved the topic along.
“ Because as humans,, when we have something that other’s know nothing about, it gives us a sense of power.” Calvin responded as he shrugged his shoulders before placing to textbook next to him. “ Think about it man, like, purebloods well, some of them, think they’re better than everyone else. “ While Calvin did hail from pureblood lineage, he wasn’t exactly the type that someone like Julian Mulciber would consider a pureblood. The two had different view points but also some shared view points on blood purism.
“ Do you think there’s pros and cons to being pureblood? “ He asked curious to see what Kris would reply with. It was always a controversial topic.

Calvin had very interesting questions. The kind that had Kristian hesitating in his responses, but for once, not out of discomfort or uncertainty. Instead, his brow was furrowed and his lips pursed as he latched onto every word his classmate shared. Especially when it came to the mention of Australia, for the boy could not help but find it intriguing. That country was certainly a far ways off from Hogwarts.
"It... well, that's tricky. How it affects other places would depend on the culture of that place," he began slowly, trying to find a satisfactory answer for the hypothetical, "Hmm, think of eastern culture. They're less direct and focus more on group harmony, so if something like Rappaport's Law was there... Maybe it would be a thing, but not?"
Bringing his scattered thoughts into reality was a bit difficult for such topics. There were no clear objectives or details to cover like with potions. Still, he remained vigilant in his attempt, "As in, it's something you know is there but people won't talk about it. So it won't be fixed." The boy was faintly reminded of his own household, with his parents expecting him to merely follow along with their ideals rather than challenge them.
He then proceeded to nod along with Calvin's further comments. Human nature was definitely a factor in the discussion, although Kristian himself could not fully comprehend a real desire for power. The most he could do was acknowledge the idea, but observe and remain on the sidelines, unable to indulge in sharing the experience. However, from what he hoped the conversation implied, such thoughts would be welcomed rather than scoffed at.
"I think the cons would be having your head stuck up your arse," Kristian stated bluntly, finally deciding to present himself bare, "And that there are no 'pros' backed with real evidence, much less any logic."

It was rather a curious thing that this was and always will be a hot topic at Hogwarts. The boy dropped some heavy thoughts on Calvin that almost made him question a few things. Not enough to question his upbringing but about the views of blood purism. " I was born in Australia where blood purism also plays a part of your social life. An almost accepted segregation." He wasn't going to bore Kristian with the magical laws of Australia and Calvin didn't really know much about either considering he didn't focus nor care too much. He was a pureblood after all. There was no boundaries for him and his family.
" People won't talk about blood purism because I believe that some people attach a negative view point on it. " He hoped his choice of words had made sense in-between his Australian accent. " Like, exactly the same as Dark Magic. I see it as a learning opportunity and I'm sure a small select few students agree. " Calvin was no dark wizard but he did practise a bit of Dark Magic here and there. Not enough to go on a killing spree but enough to harm someone and enough to defend himself from some dark and nasty curses.
" Others perceive those that study dark arts as dark wizards or witches. " He stated air quoting his last words. " I see it as a learning opportunity. While others may only want one thing. That one thing may be power. History does not establish the future but it is the basis in my opinion. " He wasn't even sure if Kris had even cared about his opinion but he was nice enough to listen to him,
" There must be some form of study on this. Surely someone in your ministry of science or whatever it's called here, is studying something like that. " Naturally, Calvin didn't invest too much in the Ministry of Magic and the so called scientists. He probably didn't even know what an unspeakable was let alone what they do.

For what seemed like the first time in a while, the boy was actively having his brain stimulated outside of his usual interests. His peer had made a decent point regarding the connection between blood purity and dark magic, or at least, a connection through how people may reject those topics. Kristian supposed he fell into that category and momentarily wondered—was there potential he refused to acknowledge?
It was a likely possibility, considering his own background influencing his perspective. Despite openly relying on "logic" and "realistic data," he could not help but associate it with his parents and therefore attach a negative connotation. But if there was something to be learned as Calvin said, if there was truly something big that he could gain, who was he to turn that down? After all, the world of possibilities usually took precedence over what was placed directly in front of him.
"Ministry of Science... You mean unspeakables? Even if it were under study, no one would know. I mean... their research is 'unspeakable' for a reason," he clarified, his tone making it obvious that he'd forgotten that wasn't exactly common knowledge. If not for his family's insistence of discussing governmental matters throughout his childhood, even he wouldn't know himself.
For a moment, Kristian kept his gaze planted on Calvin, a bit unnerving in its intensity. The boy allowed his thoughts to drift across the recesses of his mind before opening his mouth again, "If it's such an opportunity, what do you think can be gained from these things? Being from Australia and all."
His view of the elder was continuously evolving through their discussion, to the point where he could view Calvin as someone to learn from himself. His curiosity was piqued too harshly for him to think otherwise, evident in the way Kristian slightly leaned forward.

Calvin rarely the type to have such intellectual talks which was considered rare as he did hail from a house that was commonly stereotyped to be the smart kids. However, he found this conversation highly interesting and Calvin found himself more invested than ever. The topic of blood purism in modern day society was always an interesting point of discussion even if they didn't share the same views.
" What's an unspeakable? " He questioned wondering if Kris was making things up or if he was describing someone as someone that couldn't cast a spell. " Unspellable you mean? " He felt a little confused at the term having never heard of it before. " Anyway, the ministry of science is what we call our research team in Australia. " He paused for a second as he allowed Kris to finish. " Oh! So that's what you call those science people? Unspeakables? " Calvin had multiple questions in his mind, more why they were called unspeakables.
" Benefit? " Calvin didn't see any benefit considering this was the way he grew up. It was his culture the way he lived his life. Though he wasn't vocal about it, Calvin did consider himself more a purist purely based on the fact that was his living conditions back home. " Well, back home, the segregation of blood type has created barriers and allowed a normal living lifestyle. One that I can respectfully see is different here anyway. " He didn't know what Kris was asking really and if he had even managed to answer his question.

Kristian had begun to feel guilty the minute he realized his lack of real explanation. He fully acknowledged Calvin's foreign status, yet spoke as if that was not a thing to begin with. And shouldn't he be able to relate, considering Scotland wasn't his birthplace either? Still, he didn't offer any real apology; the boy provided gentle "yes's" to confirm the elder's presumptions, and hoped their conversation would flow over the mistake. He'd try being more mindful.
It seemed his pleas did not go unheard once Calvin tried answering his own question. Initially, he only responded with a hum while his eyebrows furrowed out of thought. That wasn't quite what he'd expected, and for a second wondered if he created a misunderstanding along the way. Such an idea caused bits of anxiety to flutter around in his abdomen.
The feeling pushed him to clarify, but long before Kristian could open his mouth, sounds of growing commotion reached his ears. The sounds were unexpected since everyone had been so focused until then, and he couldn't stop from curiously turning his head. Surely there wasn't anything that intriguing to garner such noise.
Everything happened within seconds. Russet irises met a cheeky grin on a translucent body. Then, they drifted to capture an equally translucent hand clutching a familiar brown orb. And what happened when said orb was launched in their direction?
"What—?!" was all the youth could manage before he (pitifully) ducked, realizing far too late it would not save him. Well, minimize the damage, sure. But the stench? For that... he'd be forced to pray.
CALVIN KLEIN note: sorry for delay, small friend emergency!
Peeves had managed to throw a dung bomb quite successfully. While he cackled away into the distance, he felt quite proud that he had managed to prank yet another set of children. Sure, he may not of managed to land a hit but at least he would leave the stench. Cackling away into the distance, Peeves faded into the old stone cement walls that covered the grounds of Hogwarts leaving nothing but the strong penetrating stench that came with a dung bomb.
Peeves can not enter House Dorms. Peeves will not disturb a thread unless given permission. Peeves will be in a thread when tagged only. Peeves will be in a thread for only a short duration.

Their conversation had come to an abrupt stop when the mischievous poltergeist paid them a visit. " Oh man, Peeves is at it again!" He responded sending out a small laugh watching at Kristian managed to dodge one of the dung bombs he had thrown. The stench left over by the dung bombs didn't seem to be too much of an issue for Calvin considering he had grew up around these particular smells. If anything, it in a weird sort of way, reminded him of back home.
" Bit of soap and a hot shower and you'll be fine. " He stated as he looked down to see one of the dung bombs had landed on his clothes. " Well that ain't good. " He stated simply thinking nothing of it. " Maybe we out to go to the lake to wash it all off? What do you think? " He questioned with Kris would be okay with heading to the lake considering how cold it was right now.
Post by KRISTIAN MORI on Aug 29, 2024 23:59:28 GMT -5
The young wizard gagged after Peeves escaped and immediately used a hand to cover his nose. While it didn't do much against the smell, it was better than nothing. Dung bombs were just far too rancid to ignore.
So why on earth did Calvin look so unaffected?
Confusion, along with a sense of awe, was evident on his face as Kristian stared at the older student. He couldn't imagine what someone had to go through to be this desensitized. There was also a small part of him that felt envious, but he temporarily put that aside in favor of examining his own clothes.
"Um, yeah," he voiced miserably, noticing bits of dung had managed to land on the bottom of his robes, "That sounds like a good idea... eugh." The boy was not truly considering the temperature outside considering the disgust visible on his features. He moved to gather his materials in preparation to leave, squinting around as he did so. If this revolting bomb had touched even the tiniest spot on anything else he owned...
"Calvin, how are you—this doesn't... bother you?" Kristian eventually couldn't help but ask. His brow was harshly furrowed, and his lips adopted the shape of a deep frown. Hell, even his stomach felt a bit queasy, and he didn't care if the reaction was "dramatic."
