Blaise was just trying to get by in school. Exams were coming up and there was a lot going on. He had Quidditch, classes, review for exams, and of course the ever-happening assignments, essays, and quizzes. It was a lot and he was just in his first year!
But there were other things preoccupying his mind. One thing was the new professor. She seemed okay in classes, although she didn't seem to like him very much. But she wasn't super mean to him or anything. She wasn't even as bad as Channing. But it was like she knew some secret about him and had some disdain towards him for some reason. Blaise couldn't explain it and no one would believe him anyway.
But then he saw her storm out of Collins' office in a huff one day. What would they even have to talk about? And why was she in a huff about whatever it was? Blaise figured professors' lives were pretty simple or just about their subject and teaching. Did they have enemies in the faculty too? Blaise pushed it off as being a normal thing and didn't think too much of it. That was until Ella had some more insight.
At breakfast a couple of weeks later, she told him and Ezra how she saw her arguing with Professor Midgen. None of them knew Midgen, since she only taught the sixth and seventh years, but they knew what she taught: the Dark Arts. Or more specifically, the theory behind it. Midgen actually was quite nice to everyone, surprisingly enough. Blaise didn't think she was a dark witch at all and he was sure his mum wouldn't hire her if she was anyway. But that was a little odd. He grew a little suspicious.
Then three weeks later, Ezra told Blaise and Ella one night when they were hanging out by the fire in the common room, that he saw her threaten Midgen. That was really suspicious. They all exchanged a look and decided to follow her around a bit after that. They took turns and of course couldn't follow her all the time. They had classes and had to sleep and not get in trouble for being out after curfew, but they did their best.
That was until during Blaise's shift, he saw her in an alcove in the corridor, talking to herself in her pocket mirror, promising that she would find it tonight. Whatever 'it' was... it didn't seem to be good. Blaise rushed to go and tell Ella and Ezra and they assumed that Gateau was probably going to steal from Hogwarts or something! Her professor position was probably all a ruse just to steal from one of the greatest places in the country.
They decided to all follow her together that day and even skip supper to do it. Unless, of course, she also had supper.
Thankfully, Gateau did have supper, but they all watched her as she did it and followed her out shortly after. They tried to keep their distance and act like just a few kids wandering down the corridors chatting, though they weren't chatting very loudly because they didn't want her to notice them. It was only enough to not seem suspicious, but they kept their eyes on her the whole time, ducking into alcoves or around the corner of the corridor when they could.
She went to the seventh floor and they hit behind in an alcove and peered out at her at what she was doing. She was pacing... and then she was suddenly through a wall? Well, it opened up for her. What was going on?
"Guys, I think we need some help. I don't know how to get in there. And I don't think anyone will believe us. We need to stop her! Let's all meet back here in 10 minutes?"
They all went out to get someone they thought could help. Blaise got Dustin and his new friend Thalia, Ezra got Nova, and Ella got Nisha.
It took 15 minutes, but they were all back there. "Thanks for helping, everyone. The new professor is doing something... bad. I just know it." Blaise looked at Ella and Ezra. "We know it. We have to stop her! And I don't think a professor would believe us and then she'll probably get away with whatever she's trying to do or steal! There's seven of us and only one of her. We just have to knock her out or something, I think we can do it!" The idea of knocking out a professor seemed so wrong, but it's not like they were trying to really hurt her. They just had to stop her from doing whatever she was trying to do until they could go get a professor! But time was of the essence.
"Only thing is... She was pacing a bit and then the wall opened up and let her in but we have no clue how to get in! Does anyone know?" Blaise looked around at everyone else, hoping one of them might have an idea. If not, maybe they could wait and see if she came back out. But what if it was a secret entrance to somewhere else in the school? They wouldn't know where she was now.

Thalia was eager to be involved in whatever Ella, Blaise and Ezra were up to. She'd agreed to go with Blaise at once, as his plea for help sounded like a prelude to an adventure. However, her willingness to participate was diminished when it became clear they were seriously going to attack an adult. Or try to, at least. Sure, she was doing great at the dueling club, but could she really get past a Shield Charm cast by a fully-trained witch? Could all seven of them do that together? And then, if they succeeded, wouldn't they get expelled if this was just a colossal misunderstanding and the Astronomy professor was not doing anything vile..?
No, of course they wouldn't. Blaise was the headmistress' son, she reminded herself. There was no way he would get kicked out of Hogwarts for anything short of using the Unforgivables. They might all get a detention, but that didn't sound too terrible. Worst case scenario - they would have to scrub some toilets. Best case scenario - they would be heroes.
Having gone through this reasoning in her mind, Thalia was more than willing to help. "Have you tried just pacing exactly how she did? Perhaps there is some secret doorway activated by a sequence of steps..." The Slytherin glanced at the floor as if expecting to see some markings there that would show where to place one's feet.

Her first year at Hogwarts had been more eventful than she had expected so far. Ella knew she would have new experiences at school, but getting attacked by acromantula in the forbidden forest, spying on a suspicious teacher, and now trying to stop said teacher from stealing something from the school? Those were definitely not within the realm of her expectations back in September.
At first she hadn’t fully been on board when Blaise had raised his suspicions about the new Astronomy professor. She seemed perfectly fine to Ella. She figured it was maybe just an odd personality thing that was throwing him off. But after witnessing her argument with Professor Midgen, and finding out more information from the boys since, she had to agree that something odd was going on. She had pondered suggesting they go tell Headmistress Cunningham, but why would she even believe them? It wasn’t like they had any proof, and who would believe a bunch of first years over a professor. This was their only way to make sure nothing nefarious happened that night. The worst that could happen is it was all a big misunderstanding and they got a bit of detention… right?
As soon as Blaise had suggested they find reinforcements, Ella had thought of Nisha. She was incredibly intelligent, and had a wonderfully imaginative mind. If anybody could figure out how to get them into that room, it was Nisha. Luckily it didn’t take much convincing for Nisha to join her, and the two headed back to the meeting spot, finding the rest had already arrived. A smile broke out on her face when she saw Dustin and Thalia standing with Blaise. She should have known Blaise would get Dustin to help, however Thalia was a bit of a surprise. The two had had a rocky start to the year, but Ella was glad to see they were now getting along so well that he would include her.
No time for small talk, however. This was serious. Having no idea how to enter the room herself, she waited for any ideas from the new recruits. Fresh eyes might help them see something they had missed. Ella perked up a bit at Thalia’s suggestion. “No harm in trying,” she offered, stepping forward to the location they had seen the professor pacing. Ella tried to remember how she had walked, mimicking her gait as closely as possible. She wasn’t sure it was working, or if she was even hitting the same spots, and was starting to feel a bit ridiculous. She just needed this, or something, to work so they could find Professor Gateau.

Nova hadn't been so sure about doing things. After all, her dad was a professor. I mean, sure she couldn't get into too much trouble. He wouldn't allow them to be expelled. But it was just weird. She listened to Blaise talk and she couldn't really find a flaw in his logic. Part of her wasn't sure if they shouldn't just ask another adult or something.
Thalia offered an idea which was maybe good. "It could also be like the wall at the train. You just have to have hope and go." She added with a shrug. She wished she knew more things or was able to help out more. But the way she was thinking, it was all just iffy. Part of her was just trying to figure out what could be going on.
She was also debating on how to knock out an adult. It seemed difficult but there had to be a way to do it, right? She would just have to debate on how to make it work. Or maybe like the passage way, someone else would be a lot smarter then her.

Lottie was wandering down the corridor on the seventh floor after exiting the common room. She wanted to go for a little stroll and also thought about that secret room she discovered a while back with her friend, Lee. It led to a swimming pool and sometimes she thought about going back there again. At least, she wanted to stroll past it.
She was walking by where the entrance was when she saw seven of her peers all huddled around outside it. "Whoa, how many people know about the pool?" she asked them.
"Pool?" repeated Blaise, perplexed.
"Yeah, the secret pool just behind that wall." She indicated the wall where the professor had gone through.
Blaise didn't think he saw a pool there before, behind the professor when he saw her go inside, and he didn't see why she would want to go to one. "I don't think that's a pool. Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I found it with my friend Lee a while ago... How did you find out about it?"
"Well we're trying to get inside but I don't think it's a pool." Blaise thought about it for a moment. "How did you find it?"
"Well..." Lottie tried to remember. "We heard about it from some older student, I forget who. But they didn't tell us where it was. So we went searching. Finally we got up to the seventh floor and we were kind of chilling around here, pacing a bit, and I was thinking about how much I wish we could find the swimming pool and then suddenly the wall opened up and a swimming pool was inside! It was great."
Blaise exchanged a look with Ella and the others. Maybe there was more to this room than just as swimming pool.
"Oh drats!" Lottie said, hitting her forehead with the palm of her head. "I was just taking a walk when I realized I'm supposed to meet someone to study! Ugh. See you guys!" she ran off in the opposite direction towards the stairs, likely going towards the Library. She might have been some help as she was a third year but they still had seven of them there, they could do this.

Blaise watched Lottie run off. It would have been good to have her help. And they were good friends, since often Lottie's mum had babysat him, so they knew each other quite well over the last few years. But Blaise was confident they could still do it! That was, if it wasn't too late, anyway.
"So what do you guys think? I don't think it's a pool..." Though he didn't think that Lottie was lying either. "Maybe it's whatever we want it to be? I mean Lottie was thinking she wanted a pool and then there was a pool! But what would Gateau want it to be? Hmm..." Blaise pondered it for a moment and started to pace back and forth, not on purpose. It was just because he was thinking.
((Anyone else feel free to figure out what she needed - Gateau's motivation is to find something someone else hid, so the answer would be a place to stash something hidden, but it might take a couple of people discussing to get there. But anyone feel free to figure that out and post about the wall opening up into an entrance. You don't have to wait for it to be Blaise's turn again to figure it out.))

After Lottie's explanation, the mysterious room was starting to make sense - as much as anything at Hogwarts could make sense. And pacing was how the door got activated, so Thalia hadn't been entirely wrong in her initial assumption.
Blaise's guess sounded perfectly reasonable, too. If the room could change according to one's wish, they might need to guess what Professor Gateau had wanted when entering. She joined Blaise in walking back and forth in front of the wall, vocalizing the wishes she was throwing at the invisible entryway.
"I want to see the place Gateau entered," she murmured first, but nothing happened.
"I want to find the thing Gateau is trying to steal," was another try, albeit also unsuccessful.
"I want... I want to find the pool?" This sounded silly, but it had worked for Lottie so it was worth a shot. Nothing again.
"I want to see the place where something valuable is hidden." She was running out of ideas... until another one struck her so hard it made her halt.
"What if Gateau had to try and guess how to enter, too? Maybe it's not what she wants, but what the person who owns the object wanted?" She looked around at her friends, wondering if her words made any sense to them. The guess heavily relied on their assumption that the Astronomy professor was trying to steal an item, rather than plant or corrupt something.

Ella’s expression lit up at Thalia’s idea. “Yes! That makes sense! Maybe she was struggling to find… whatever it is she wanted to find.” The group still had no clue what Professor Gateau was trying to locate, and possibly steal, from Hogwarts. The school was known as a sort of fortress, so there was no telling what kind of relics were hidden in its many rooms. “That would explain why she would have been upset coming out of Professor Collins’ office, and why she was arguing with Professor Midgen. She was trying to get information on where to look.”
With a look of determination, Ella joined Blaise in his pacing, although hers was with intention. She put herself in the mind of somebody trying to hide a precious object. Something worth stealing. Something that needed to be protected. She needed a room where such objects could be hidden and difficult to find, somewhere nobody would think to look for it. She paced back and forth once, twice, three times, looking at the wall every time she did in the hopes it would work, until suddenly a door appeared where Professor Gateau had previously vanished. Ella turned to her friends with a beaming smile. They had done it, and now came the hard part: finding and stopping Professor Gateau.

Thalia and Ella were onto something. Blaise thought about what they were saying and started to pace a little slower. But then Ella started to pace and think about how to get inside so Blaise started pacing more again with her.
Suddenly, a door appeared where the wall was! It was right where Gateau went in as well. Blaise's eyes widened. They did it! Of course, this was the easy part. Now they had to confront her and stop her from whatever she was trying to do! Whatever it was, it probably wasn't good. People didn't normally threaten others for a good reason. If it was, she should have just gone to his mum!
Blaise raised his wand and made sure that the others were ready to go inside before slowly opening the door and sneaking inside.
The room was a little dark, with a few torches along the walls. However, the light didn't travel very far because the large room was filled with tall shelves to house random objects. Blaise wasn't sure what all of these things were and there were many shelves that were empty.
He didn't light his wand because that would alert her to their presence very easily. He didn't want to talk loudly, either. He whispered to the others. "Let's stick together." Splitting up to find her might have been faster, but they didn't want to find her alone and unprepared. While she was an adult and clearly far more skilled than they were, the only advantage they had was their numbers. No matter the skill, 7 vs. 1 was still a little tough! And they didn't want to battle her to the death or anything. They just wanted to subdue her. That should have been possible. Blaise thought they could do it anyway! But he had to admit that he was feeling quite nervous about this whole thing. Was that what it was like to be brave? Feeling nervous but doing it anyway? He hoped so.
As a group, they started to walk into the room lined with shelves much taller than they were, sneaking as they did, trying to find where Gateau was.

Thalia felt proud for having made another accurate guess. Her theory was put to work by Ella, and now they could see the door! Being sorted into different houses didn't diminish their ability to work well together, even if it did keep them separated so often.
Once they entered the room, more serious thoughts occupied her mind. They were about to attack a professor! Thalia wasn't sure if she was more afraid of the harm that Gateau could inflict on them if she really was evil, or of her own mother's reaction if this was all just a misunderstanding. Either way, she wasn't going to chicken out and abandon her friends.
"Does anyone know how to cast the Shield Charm?" she whispered as the group proceeded deeper into the cluttered room. They all probably knew at least one offensive spell, but Protego was a little advanced - pity, because it would come in useful when fighting an adult witch.

The room was eerily quiet as Ella walked in along with her friends, her wand at the ready, making sure to stick close to the others. Her curiosity wanted to further explore this mysterious new room, but she knew they had better odds together as a group, and so followed Blaise’s lead. The room was filled with tall shelves, much taller than any of them, filled with a variety of objects. Ella was worried how they would find Gateau in such a space. It seemed to stretch on forever, and there was no easy for them to see over top of the shelves to get a better sense of the area.
While Ella was more concerned with finding the Professor, Thalia it seemed was more worried about what they would do upon finding her. A valid concern, to be fair. “They covered it a bit in the dueling club, but not sure how it would fare against an adult,” she whispered back, glad for the extracurricular teachings in that moment. They could use every possible advantage if they were to somehow incapacitate a full grown witch.
It was at that moment she heard a rattling sound coming from the left side of the room, as if someone was moving objects around in one of the further shelves. “That way,” she announced to the group, turning down an aisle and proceeding further into the large storage room, picking up the pace a bit to ensure they were able to catch Gateau in the act.
