It was finally time for the First Task. All of the Champions had been excited for this since they got chosen as Champions, which hadn't been that long ago. The Goblet of Fire announced their names only two weeks ago. The Champions didn't have much time to prepare, but there also wasn't any way for them to prepare anyway. They had no hints about the first task, though would be able to find some hints about the future tasks if they found them. Other than brushing up on their skills in general, of course. They could always do that.
The First Task was attended by all, but many were tired. It took place at midnight. The reason being, it was in the Osservatorio (or, Observatory), which was a large domed tower. The students had to walk to it over a bridge that was connected to the fourth floor of the school. At nighttime, the dome became invisible so the students could use their telescopes to look at the night sky.
Tam had been there for quite a few hours, setting up. She both delegated and did a lot herself as well. She was the Ministry Member in charge of the event and would be delivering the instructions to the Champions. Her whole name was Tamara, but she usually went by Tam.
The Champions were to meet in the Champions Tent just outside the osservatorio While the bridge was most frequently used, there were also stairs at the bottom of the tower. It was just usually faster for the students to use the bridge rather than going outside, all the way around the school, and up the fights of stairs to get to the osservatorio.
They couldn't hear much of the audience arriving as they mostly took the bridge, four floors higher. But some people trickled in through the entrance at the bottom of the tower and they heard them passing by.
The Champions were all anxious. All they were allowed to bring was their wand. And they wouldn't be able to summon anything. There was an anti-summoning spell placed on the whole area of the task too, just to make sure they used their wits and skills instead of just summoning things to be done the task super quickly.
Tam entered the tent and introduced herself. "Hello everyone. I'm sure you are all anxious to get started. My name is Tam Page and I will be explaining the First Task to you. First of all, congratulations! This year will be quite a year to remember." She smiled at them, though they didn't all reciprocate. Not that they weren't happy to be there necessarily, but some were too nervous to think about having good social cues at the moment.
"Now, let's get started. This task has a few parts. You will first use a telescope to find a particular constellation. Then, you will need to draw it on a piece of parchment and find your chest with it. Once you open the chest, you will find three items. You are allowed to take one of them only to help you with your task, as well as your wand of course. Then, you will need to journey around the school grounds to find 5 items. Once you find them all, you will need to use them to get into the chest in the middle of the osservatorio. There, you will find your flag, which you will need to plant in your telescope you used at the beginning of the task." It was quite a bit, but things would become clear as the Champions went through the Task. "If ever you are too injured to continue, please send up some red sparks to forfeit the task (but not the Tournament) and someone will come to collect you."
"Now, we will draw for what constellation you will all need to find in your telescope." One at a time, she had them all draw out a photo of a constellation with its name from a small bag.
Ares: Orion
Maggie: Gemini
Desiree: Cygnus
Henri: Scorpius
Pepper: Perseus
Chatri: Crux
Tobias: Canis Minor
Manuel: Hydra
Calvin: Pegasus
Emma: Ursa Major
Silvia: Andromeda
Azra: Libra
"Everyone's sorted? Good. Follow me," she said simply as she turned around, left the tent, and led all of the Champions into the tower and up the stairs.
They all were amazed when they got into the Osservatorio. There were seats all around in a cicle filled with their friends and peers and professors too. In the middle was a large wooden chest (the one for the end of the task). Also in the middle but taking up space all the way across, were a line of 12 telescopes. The smaller chests where the three objects were inside were lined up in a semi circle along the edge of the osservatorio on the far side (north) of the dome. Right below the raised benched seating.
All the Champions found a telescope each and saw a little notch at the top where the flag could be planted. There was some parchment and a quill and ink next to it so they could draw the constellation. After a few moments, a whistle blew and they all got started on the Task.
((No summoning spells (accio) will be allowed in this task.
As it is midnight, when you venture into grounds, remember that it will be pitch dark. You can use Lumos, but you cannot perform spells while you are using it. So you may need to turn off Lumos for a second to do a spell.
You cannot take more than one item from the chest. If you do try, you will find yourself unable to lift the other ones. They'll be stuck to the bottom of the chest.
Finding the constellation:
Under your post, please put in ((notes)) the directions. I'm using a constellation app. But of course, it might not be the same as where you are in the world, so it likely will be guesses for everyone. Make sure to say the direction your character is looking (north, north-east, east, etc.).
Drawing the constellation:
Your character will need to draw the constellation then bring it over to the chests to find your chest. It will glow when you have found your chest. This is optional, but you can draw it on a piece of paper (in real life) and upload that into your post. You may get some bonus points for doing so. (:
Finding the objects around Firenze Academy:
Simply say what direction your character would like to go (north, north-east, east, etc.). Then I'll let you know where you ended up and if it's possible to go there (some directions might take you to the edge of Firenze Academy, so you can't go past the borders of the school). If you are at one of the 5 locations with an item, you can post resting to restore 1 HP.
Health:
Everyone has 10 HP. If you are attacked by a creature and lose the fight, you will lose 2 HP (sometimes more). The creature doesn't have any HP. If you are successful at fighting it off, they will leave you alone.
Using your Items:
The necklace is automatic. The mirror you can use while travelling (make sure to include in ((notes)) if you are). The watch must be used in a separate post (can't combine with travelling).
Points:
In character wise, the Headmasters/Headmistresses give your character a score. All of the ones other than your own. However, out of character, we instead have a scoring system. You get points for finishing the Task, for being done first, second, third, etc., for good behaviour, for being clever, and can have points deducted for bad behaviour (though you get more points for good behaviour than are deducted for bad behaviour so feel free to make it interesting!). Everyone can get a maximum of 50 points per Task. It only gives you a head start on the next Task but doesn't guarantee winning in the end.
Audience:
Feel free to post cheering on your favourite Champion(s)! They won't be able to watch them after they leave the Osservatorio. Although they could try to look out through the dome behind them to try and spot them in the grounds.
Order of tasks in a nutshell:
- Find the constellation
- Draw the constellation
- Find your chest
- Grab an item from the chest
- Find the five objects around Firenze Academy
- Come back to the Osservatorio (find your way) and open the chest
- Plant your flag in the telescope))
