Yester Castle was built in the late 12th century back when wizard and muggle relations were open. There was no Statute of Secrecy. Therefore, it got out with all the battles between Scotland and England, fought by both wizards and muggles alike, that the Great Hall was built by goblins.
Rumours were just as they are now. They spread like wildfire and the actual details got lost in the shuffle. Eventually, the muggles and wizards both thought that Sir Hugo de Giffard had an army of goblins at his disposal. Of course, this was completely false, as goblin and wizard relations have never had that sort of relationship. In actuality, he paid them handsomely in gold to build the Goblin Hall for him.
Over time, wizards came to know the truth, but muggles held onto the rumour. This helped when hundreds of years later, it was opened up again as a tourist attraction. But by then, it was mostly in ruins, having been sacked and ransacked from war.
