Ella could barely believe that a whole month had already passed since they had first arrived at Hogwarts for their second year. It felt like only yesterday they had gotten off the train. Of course, in true Hogwarts fashion, classes didn’t take long to pick up, already overwhelming her with the amount of homework. Second year was proving to be quite a bit more challenging than her first, although Ella was up for the challenge.
That evening, however, her brain was in need of a short reprieve. She had already spent a good portion of the night finishing off an essay for Charms, and completing the assigned reading for History of Magic. Now, she was ready to call it a night and spend some time relaxing. Closing her textbook with a thud and placing it on the ground next to her, she stretched her arms above her head with a yawn. She was currently seated on an armchair in the Gryffindor common room, next to one of the coffee tables, with her friends nearby doing their own homework. Twisting around in her seat, she let her legs dangle over one armrest, her head resting on the other.
Tilting her head back, she looked over at Blaise sitting nearby, clearly focused on whatever he was doing. “Care for a break?” Part of her hated disturbing him since he was not the most studious on a regular basis, but she figured she could help him catch up if she were the cause of any delays in his homework.

It was a dull sort of night. They were all in the common room working on their own homework. They were still only second years, so they did have all the same classes, but that didn't mean that they were on the same pace as each other. Blaise was writing out some answers to History of Magic homework questions. It wasn't an essay but the questions seemed to be essay questions. At least, the answers couldn't just be a few words. Ella probably had this done a while ago, because it wasn't that hard - for her anyway.
Blaise was nearly done and his mind was wandering to other things like the events of last year. Nothing dangerous had happened yet this year, but he still felt like it might. He grew up in the wizarding world all his life and heard about what his mum and uncle Harry went through, and all their other friends too, like Rose's parents, but it was weird when that sort of stuff was happening to you and your own friends.
"Yes!" Blaise said as he straightened up with a smile. He was very eager to have a break from these questions! He was going so slowly at this point anyway, not really feeling very focused. "Are you done your essay?" he asked, wondering if she was actually done or just needed a break for a bit from it.
Just then, someone's cat came up and started rubbing on Blaise's leg. He wasn't sure whose it was, but there were various pets around the common room pretty frequently. He bent down and started petting it on the top of its head. "Hey little buddy."

Ella wasn’t surprised that Blaise immediately took her up on her offer, smiling in response to his enthusiastic agreement. “For tonight, yes,” she responded with a long sigh. “I’ll reread it in the morning. My brain is far too tired for a thorough revision.” With another stretch, she flipped over on to her stomach to better face Blaise, her long red hair falling out of the messy bun in which was currently affixed atop her head.
As if by magic, a cat with long white hair and vibrant blue eyes seemed to suddenly appear next to her friend, rubbing its head on his leg. Ella knew well enough, however, that cats did not need magic to suddenly appear in random places. They had some odd magic all of their own. “Ah, Moon. Nice of you to join us,” she addressed the cat with a small laugh, sitting up in the armchair and patting at the small gap next to her on the seat. The cat promptly hopped up on the chair’s armrest, head raised in anticipation of head scritches, which Ella dutifully obliged.
“Care for some chocolate?” She asked as she turned her attention back to Blaise, all while still petting the needy kitty. Pausing in the pets for a moment, she leaned over to grab a couple chocolate frogs out of her book bag, barely waiting for a response before she tossed one over to Blaise. Once the packet was open and she had taken a bite out of the frog’s head, she returned her free hand to the cat’s demands. “Let me know if you get Alberta Toothill or Jocunda Sykes. I need them to complete my Famous Witches collection,” she mentioned in between bites of chocolate, struggling to remove her own card from its packaging with only one hand.
