Now that all the paperwork had been completed and his new role as Muggle Studies Professor at Hogwarts had been established, it was now time for Rafe to lead the class. He divided his students evenly with the 3rd,4th and 5th years together and the senior students separate. Today's focus was going to be about communication and how the Muggles used technology for communication.
He arrived early into the classroom and set up three tables at the centre of the room placed on one table an old mobile phone which didn't work in the magical world, the second table was a laptop and on the third table was a rather old piece of communication. A quill and and a basic scroll of parchment paper. On the board behind him, he wrote two words in bold letters. He waited for a few students to arrive before beginning with the lecture ahead of them.
Communication Devices
" Good morning everyone. My name is Professor Lauren. I was previously employed by the Ministry of Magic as an Unspeakable. Today I will be your Muggle Studies Professor for this year. " He smiled at the students in front of him and welcomed the small group. " Gather round the three tables. " He gestured as he waved his students closer.
" Who can tell me what all three things here have in common?"

A new Muggle Studies Professor was always an interesting thing to look out for. Whilst he disliked Muggles and their muggle status magical folk, he did weirdly enough enjoy learning about the things the muggles used. Mainly because he would bring this type of information over to Julian where they would take the micky out of their lowly devices. Although he would never voice his thoughts out loud especially in the presence of a Professor, he knew that he would take mental notes and put on a façade of enjoying the subject. Gathering around the tables, he waited to see if anyone else would answer the question before him.
Looking around, Henri noticed that he was the only fourth year in the class which made him feel a little lonely. The professor was quite energetic and so were some of the students so it was great to have that energy around him. He gathered toward the centre as he looked at the object in front of him. Whilst he knew what the quill and scroll was, he wasn't quite sure what the connection was with the other devices in front of him. He waited to see if someone else would answer for him.

"That there's a mobile device. " He responded to the Professor pointing at the first device. The non-magics in Australia used these technology devices for almost everything really. It was rather upsetting to see how glued they were to their devices. " I'll pass the things to the rest. " He said as a good gesture not really knowing how the three had any forms of connection between the three of them.
Ivy liked Muggle Studies. Her mother was a muggle, so she wasn’t completely unfamiliar with the things that they studied in class, but it was good for her to understand them more. She liked being able to help her mum with things like ironing and using computers, and felt it gave her a more rounded education.
She had a look at all the things on the tables. One of them was a phone, one a computer, and the other something she used all the time at school. Tentatively putting up her hand, she said “Well, they can all be used to communicate with people. I think computers use - emails? I think that’s what they’re called.” She remembered her mum once trying to teach her how to use emails, but didn’t get very far. There were an awful lot of buttons to press and it took a while to get used to typing. RAFE LAUREN

Rose silently wondered why an Unspeakable would leave their employment to become a Muggle Studies professor. It seemed an odd switch in career to her, although to be fair she knew very little about the job of an Unspeakable. She simply hoped that the new professor wouldn’t be too strict. She had partially taken the course to be an easy elective, believing she already knew a fair bit about muggle through her mother’s influence. It would be quite disappointing if that changed due to a new faculty member.
Joining the rest of the class, she examined the objects on the tables, before looking back up to the board at the front of the class. The answer to Professor Lauren’s question seemed quite obvious, given the fact he had written the answer in clear view as the title of his lesson. Rose was about to point out that fact when another student answered the question. She wondered if the Ravenclaw had the same realization as her, or simply knew the answer by looking at the devices. Given she had nothing more to add, she shut her mouth, realizing perhaps she didn’t know as much about muggles as she thought she did.

He recognised some of the faces that came through that had the same confused when they found Rafe there rather than their normal Muggle Studies Professor. Whilst this was always amusing, he hoped that it wouldn’t be long before they were a custom to him and his classroom. fostered a welcoming and happy classroom to the best of his ability. He believed that a kind hearted and warm environment was the best environment to foster a learning room.
“ Fantastic work, Miss Walsh and Mr.Klein! 5 Points to Ravenclaw “. It was his first time rewarding points so he hoped he had done this right. “ I’m sure everyone has gathered that our topic today will focus on communication devices. “ He nodded at the students as he made his way over to the quill and scroll.
“ Who can tell me what this one has a connection to?” He asked as he tapped his hand on the quill causing it to levitate around the room gracefully as it floated around the students. “ There’s a connection here….Who can tell me and why it’s so important. “
[OOC: In the most simplest form, communication is done through hand writing or writing in general dating back to ancient times when people used to draw on caves to communicate. ]

Leo never knew what to do when the activities involved crowding around a table and looking at something. He could hardly reach out and touch--what if it was something dangerous? Or if it was arranged in a specific way and he knocked it over? No, Leo found that it was usually best to either wait and listen to what everyone else was saying, or, if he really needed to, he could just ask what it was or what it looked like.
Communication devices sounded like a fascinating topic, though. He couldn't wait to learn more. Muggles were so fascinating with the ways they made up for not being able to do spells.
Leo is blind. Don't expect him to notice your character waving at him.

Rose initially stayed quiet as the professor asked another question, looking around to see if anybody else had the answer. That was when she noticed a familiar face further to her right. She had competed against Leo in her first ever dueling tournament, and he had been a very kind competitor, particularly considering their age difference. Since then they hadn’t really had much contact, although it wasn’t surprising since he was three years ahead of her and they were in different houses. Regardless, it was nice to see him again, and to actually have a class with him that year. She flashed him a kind smile in greeting with a small wave, hoping not to disturb the class, before she remembered that he was blind and would not notice the gesture.
It only took her a few moments after to realize that he probably had no idea what they were currently observing, considering the professor had not described it outright. Moving a bit closer, she leaned over so they could talk without getting in trouble. “He’s currently levitating a quill and a scroll,” she whispered so he could engage in the discussion if he wanted. “If you want I can describe what he’s showing so you don’t feel left out,” she offered, not wanting to force her help on him if it wasn’t wanted. Despite being a Slytherin, Leo was much too kind to say something, at least in the middle of class.
“The other two objects on the table are this flat muggle computer thing, and one of those mobile telephones of theirs.” Rose had remembered seeing them when she had visited muggle London with her family. It seemed most muggles were glued to those little devices instead of engaging with the world around them. The thought gave her an idea and she tentatively raised her hand. “Wasn’t writing one of the first forms of communication? Other than speech, of course, but that has to be done face to face. So I guess it’s the first form of communication humans used to talk to others at a distance?” Rose wasn’t sure if it was the correct answer, but she figured it was worth a shot, particularly since the other students were remaining relatively quiet thus far.

Earning points for his house was a new concept to him considering they didn’t have a house system back in Australia. How was he to react? He almost felt like a child with it all. He smiled and looked toward the other girl who was awarded points. Leaning in, he whispered something to her to try and help him understand the system. “ So like, what happens if we get the most points for the house? Do we get like, an award or something?”

Seeing Ravenclaw house getting points left a little sting on him. He hoped that one day Hufflepuff would one day take home the trophy but the likelihood of that happening were rare considering it was quite the popular house with lots of students in them. Observing the class around him, he wrote down the things the professor and other students were saying.
Ivy couldn’t help a grin from spreading across her face. It was so rare that she had the courage to speak up, let alone be awarded house points. She quite liked this teacher, he seemed much nicer than some of her other professors, namely Professor Channing, who still terrified her. Leaning in to hear what the other student who was awarded house points was asking her, she whispered “Sort of. All the house points get added up through the year and the house with the most points wins the House Cup. It doesn’t really mean anything to be honest, but it’s a nice bit of competition. I don’t think you get anything individually though.” To be honest, she wasn’t sure, having never earned more than a handful of points for Ravenclaw. She smiled at the boy, she knew he was new from Australia or something. Maybe they didn’t have houses there. CALVIN KLEIN

So in Calvin’s mind, after hearing what Ivy had said, it made him ponder what really was the purpose to winning then? “ So no individual rewards just a group house cup thing at the end of the year? “ He replied back to her with a curious look to his face. “ So has a house ever finished on negative points? Like deducted so much that they end up losing by a large margin? And does our house ever win a lot? “ He asked feeling the pull of the competitive side running through him all of a sudden.

“ Professor? “ He asked as he raised a hand finally building the confidence to speak up. “ Could we also state that the ancient civilisations of muggles used drawings as a form of communication? “ He asked continuing on to what Rose had to say. “ Like how the Egyptians used hieroglyphs to communicate stories and cave men paintings? “ Of course his source of information came from his love of history and the fact that he somehow passed Ancient Runes last year along with his own interest in learning. Both magical and muggle history.

Though he tried to hide it, Levi smiled softly at the fact Ravenclaw house received some house points. It may of been only 5 but it was still 5 more than Slytherin had earned in this lesson. He looked over toward Ivy with a soft smile as his means of saying well done. He began writing down some of the notes the Professor was saying and wondered why this was so important. Perhaps there was a connection from these devices to the magical world he was not seeing. “ Professor? “ He asked kindly waiting for his turn like the good student he was. “ What type of communication devices do we have here?” He asked hoping to trigger a rather interesting conversation.
