Roleplay Example:
All the spells she could potentially employ if faced with danger were now coming to the front of Maeve's mind. At the back of it, a small cowardly voice was saying she should probably head back. She focused on making a list of likely incantations and ignored the gradually growing unease. Flipendo would probably be effective in most situations. Petrificus Totalus and Locomotor Mortis were pretty basic, but she was not certain it would work on non-humans. Impedimenta might be effective on creatures, she expected. There was a spell specifically for spider banishment, which would be useful against Acromantulas... but that she could not recall, try as she might. It was such a disappointment that they weren't teaching practical Dark Arts here. This year back at Durmstrang, her former classmates would be learning some dark spells that could be employed in combat. In the meanwhile, she was being taught some pacifistic crap focused on defense. Causing a wild beast sudden intense pain was the easiest way to make it reconsider attacking a witch, she was certain.
Filling her head with such thoughts helped the fourth-year disregard the disquiet she was feeling. It made her feel brave again, and prepared, though not as relaxed as she was when she left the castle. At one point, a small creature burst from the roots under a tree she was passing, and Maeve loosed the Knockback Jinx at it without even thinking. Luckily, she missed - it was just a fox, running away from her.
After another five minutes of uneventful wandering, Maeve caught a glimpse of something white ahead. It looked so untainted that her first thought was of freshly-fallen snow. That could not be it, though - it didn't snow so early in autumn so far down south, and the weather was pretty warm today. She stopped and strained to get a better look at it. The white creature moved between the trees. The sight made her hold her breath.
Maeve didn't think anything could make her look away at this point. She was wrong. There was a sound of something crashing through the trees, approaching fast. The Slytherin whipped around, grasping her wand tightly. She would not use a spell until she saw what it was, the teen resolved. It was difficult to make out the source of the noise, as the trees were especially branchy here. Then the attacker rammed into her and Maeve lost her footing.
"Ow, that hurt," she complained, rising to her feet again. At the last moment before the collision, she had realized it was just another student. Which was timely, because at around two moments before the collision she was about to cast a spell. Maeve rubbed her side where she hit a root when falling, and studied the newly arrived Gryffindor. The older girl was familiar. It took a while to remember her name. Apinya, it finally came to her. So Maeve wasn't the only one who decided to take a stroll through the woods today. The other girl had encountered something that made her flee, though. This should have made Maeve want to turn back. Strangely, she only felt more at ease now - having someone else with her granted a sense of security. "Was it following you?" If it was, it probably gave up quickly, seeing how fast the runner was.
It was only now that Maeve remembered what she had been doing before the encounter. She turned back to where the white creature had been, but there was nothing now. The two girls had made too much noise and drove it away. "I think I saw a unicorn there," she said, pointing. "Should we try tracking it?"
