THEME
Sorting time is here at last. Sorting time it is a blast.
Give me a post on any of your characters going through the sorting. A now adult that had the old school had. A new school that had the scarf. Did they think something was broken? Just make it related to the sorting. They could even be watching the sorting and seeing where their friends ended up.
Word count: I don't care. Just be reasonable, friends.

"Sweeney, Xerxes!"
Hearing his name made it feel official. Xerxes let out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding and wandered up to where the hat was sitting. Thankfully his parents had never said much about house preferences. And being the oldest sibling, it wasn't like he had to worry about avoiding his siblings or anything like that.
The hat was on his head and there was some humming and thinking sounds. Xerxes tried to block them out. Instead he just thought about what he could see. There were a lot of people and that was....making him panic more. Looking down at the ground, he spotted a spider. That at least made him grin.
He'd missed the words from the hat, but he didn't miss being sort of shoved towards the Hufflepuff house. He did scoop up the spider on his way to the house and found an empty seat. In moments he was talking to people and things felt better.
There were benefits to having a surname so close to the beginning of the alphabet. Sarah was one of the first few children to go up to be Sorted, and she didn't have very long to stew on the matter. Still, she found herself holding her breath as she sat on the stool and waited for the Hat to be placed on her head. Then there it was, obscuring her vision, and she let out her breath with a woosh.
"Ah, what a mess. Yes, you've got quite a messy head ... but that's not your fault, now is it?" It took her a moment to identify the voice in her head as the Sorting Hat - and for a panicked moment she thought that other people could hear it. But no ... that voice was distinctly in her head and she knew the difference.
"Don't worry. What's in your head is our little secret. You're not the first one whose come through here in bad shape, and I keep all their secrets. Never have betrayed a one." The hat sighed, and Sarah felt like it wished it could tell someone some of those secrets. Secrets like hers, where someone deserved punishment.
"Let's see ... there's bravery there ... and intelligence ... and budding ambition. What do you think, my dear?"
"I want everyone to know I'm just as strong as he is," she thought firmly, a fire burning in her. She wasn't less than him. She wasn't scared of him.
"Are you sure? You could go your own way in Ravenclaw ... be your own person ... show people he doesn't matter."
"I'm sure."
"Very well. Then it had better be SLYTHERIN!"
Sarah got up, ignoring him still at the table, and went to a knot of younger students at the Slytherin table. She didn't introduce herself until prompted to. Didn't hardly speak. But she was where she needed to be.

The young eleven year old walked nervously up to the stool. Finding out about being a witch was still a notion Meagan was trying to wrap her head around.Sitting down on the stool the blonde waited and suddenly she heard a voice in her head as the hat was placed there.
"Ah...a muggleborn, interesting. "
"um...yeah, I am." she spoke back to the hat, wondering why that even mattered.
"I know just where to put you." The hat replied in Meagan's mind. It didn't matter to the hat that the young girl was a muggleborn. There was something about her that the aged piece of cloth felt was right for the house he had in mind. Maybe it was her ambition. "SLYTHERIN!" the hat finally shouted loud and clear.
As the hat left her head and Meagan went to go sit down she was left feeling a little confused. Slytherin? Wasn't that the house that had mostly purebloods and didn't the house's namesake Salazar prefer it that way? The young witch wanted to know more about the school she'd be attending so she purchased a book about the History of Hogwarts to read on the train which was where she found that bit of information on the house she'd been placed in. Meagan didn't have any family that went to Hogwarts before her due to growing up with muggle parents so the first year had no idea how this Slytherin thing was going to work out. Hopefully she'd eventually make some friends but Meagan didn't have a prayer of that happening due to being the odd one out of her house.
Joey heard the person call for his name, but why should he? The only true House he needed to be in was Slytherin. "I think you're up," a fellow unsorted first year stated. Joey looked at him, "Silence, you moron, or I'll turn you into a bird feeder," he warned. The unsorted first year backed away in fear - so did others who heard Joey's comments. Joey looked at the stool, walking slowly towards it, and sat down.
As soon as the Hat touched his head, Joey immediately thought: "I'll burn you in the middle of the night if you put me in the wrong House" he warned. The Hat with haste yelled out "SLYTHERIN!" Joey gave a grin and walked over to the Slytherin table, giving a glare at some of the other unsorted first years.
"Welcome to Slytherin, Joey!" a prefect stated extending a hand for a handshake. Joey didn't reply, nor did he pay him any attention. All he could think about was the future.

The butterflies dancing in Marjorie's stomach multiplied when her name was called.
"Simmons, Marjorie."
Letting loose a quiet breath, the eleven-year-old stepped forward. The distance to the stool suddenly felt greater than it had been minutes before, but she steeled her nerves and forced her legs to move. She knew which house she was to be in—Ravenclaw, like her mother. Ravenclaw was the house of the wise, and being wise meant having knowledge. She wanted that knowledge, to learn all the answers to the mysteries the world had left to be discovered.
Hmm, curious. A voice crawled into her mind, and it took all her effort to maintain a pleasant smile. Her father had told her about the Sorting process, but it did not prepare her for the discomfort of having her thoughts open to a magical object. Eager to learn, but not without a strong thirst to prove yourself.
The Sorting Hat might have been weighing its options, but she knew where she belonged. Ravenclaw.
The wry voice responded. With that ambition of yours, Slytherin could be great, you know.
Marjorie did know. She knew all too well that generations of Simmons had been in Slytherin, but she had no intention of being yet another lost in the sea of them. She wanted to carve her mark in the world with the most powerful weapon she knew of—knowledge. Only one house would be able to help her achieve that. Ravenclaw.
Ravenclaw, eh? Are you sure?
There was no hesitation in her answer.
A second later, the Sorting Hat's announcement echoed through the Great Hall. "Ravenclaw!"
Her smile grew. The hat was plucked from her head, and she left to join her new housemates at their table. This was it. She was finally at Hogwarts, ready to learn all there was about magic. The Sorting Hat had placed her in Ravenclaw, and she was one of them now. She belonged here. She had to.
