Magical Moments -- Her first sign of magical ability came when she was six years old. After climbing onto the roof of her house because her friend threw the ball on it in a huff she slipped and fell. Instead of landing on the ground she stopped midair before landing on the ground. Blaming it on a fluke and trick of light her parents ignored the incident until lightbulbs around the house started exploding when Helen was angry.
Second-Hand Piano – When Helen was 8, her parents surprised her with a used piano. The keys were slightly stiff, and the colour was a bit off, but it was theirs and it meant she could play whenever she wanted.
Catching Toads (Summer 2014): As a pre-Hogwarts celebration, the McBride family went on a three-day camping trip. It was there that Helen found Dahlia. Dahlia wasn’t afraid of her like the other toads and Helen knew right away that she was meant to have her new amphibian friend. After a lot of begging and a bit of pouting, her parents agreed to let her take the toad to school with her. It was on the list of approved familiars, and it was cheaper than buying a pet at a pet shop.

roleplay example
The silence of the empty Gryffindor girls’ dormitory was broken by a huff and the thud of a rucksack being tossed onto the bed furthest from the door. The contents of the bag spilled across the bed. Helen McBride, normally smiling with some unknown secret was in a horrible mood, and Professor Maddox Bristow was the reason for it. For a Gryffindor he was really annoying. He was parent annoying. Like her parents she thought that he liked reminding her that she needed to work on her spelling. He actually had the nerve to tell her that he had a dictionary she could use. Remembering the encounter Helen rolled her eyes before stomping toward her spilled bag. The sight of the pens had her thanking her mother for getting sick of seeing ink stains on everything her daughter owned when she came home for the summer holidays. The ball point pens were a rarity at Hogwarts, but her mother sent her a fresh box of them every time Helen told her that she needed more – even if the need came from losing them and not using them until the ink ran out.
Grabbing the pens she threw all but one of them into her bag as she pulled out her muggle studies book. There was no point in ignoring the inevitable. If she didn’t know the technical crap that went with the sports on the page in front of her then she was doomed to another lecture. Adults were way too nosy for their own good. With a dramatic flourish – that looked slightly petulant considering she was alone in the dormitory – Helen immediately set to work opening her muggle studies book to Chapter four. The lone pen she saved from being tossed into her bag unconsciously went into her mouth as she stared at the open book in front of her and fought her way through the words on the page.
When she got through the section on the strike zone (which was pretty cool to see, even if she knew about it already) she was stopped in her tracks by a large list of muscles she cared nothing about. Open mouthed she stared at the page and wondered why on earth they needed to learn any of the weird words on the page. She was fourteen and liked to play sports. She wasn’t some mad scientist trying to figure out the perfect throw. Was there actually a reason for knowing about the crap that went into throwing a baseball? No way!
