Almost ninety years have passed since the end of the Republic and the rise of Augustus, the first emperor. The line of the Julius Caesars has failed, extinguished as a result of familial disagreements and unchecked ambition. Their blood continues on through distant relatives, but it is now a branch of the Claudii that maintains a hold over the empire. Rome's influence extends across the whole of the known world, dominating Europe and Asia, and yet internally not all is as well as it might seem. Not one but two Caesars rule, one raised from amongst the ranks of the Praetorians, the other the legitimate but young and inexperienced son of Claudius.

War rages across the empire in Britannia, in Judaea, and in Dacia. This is no longer the same Principate that Augustus created; while the Caesars maintain the most power, they are not invincible. The senate, having won back bits and bits of influence through years of crises, remains unruly. Though none of its current members lived during the time of the Republic, there are many who plot and scheme for an end to the empire and a return to tradition. They watch the ongoing wars and the increasing tension within the empire with wary eyes, waiting for the opportune moment to show, once and for all, that a Caesar is not necessary.
