It was a little disappointing for Don that the Australian teen turned down his invitation. Getting to know someone from a different magical culture could have been interesting. Especially since he'd never even met wizards or witches from outside the British Isles.
He shrugged and turned to Rosemary, who had just offered cookies to her companions. "Count me in!" Turning down free sweets was not in his nature - unless it was something with liquorice flavour. He took one with a thankful little bow of his head. "Is baking your hobby? Mmm, these are good."
The offer of homemade baked goods seemed to change the transfer student's mind as well. Don one-handedly shuffled his belongings to make space, while devouring a cookie at the same time. Once his trunk and broom were out of the way, he sat back and studied the newcomer curiously. "Great to meet you, Calvin-who-might-be-a-fourth-year. I'm Don - definitely a fourth-year." The transfer certainly looked to be quite a few years older than Don, old enough to be an associate professor - could he really be in the same year? Perhaps magical schooling started much later in other countries.
He decided to let the girls do their own introductions, but his curiosity did not let him halt the conversation just yet. "So, what's your story? Why are you at Hogwarts instead of... um..." he blanked out, not certain he even knew what educational institutions there were overseas. "...instead of an Australian school?" was the best he could come up with to complete the sentence.

Ella had to admit, she was quite disappointed when Thalia mentioned leaving their compartment to join the other girl. She understood why her cousin wanted to do so, and could appreciate the gesture, but there was still something that rubbed her the wrong way about the whole situation. She tried to shake it off and give the new girl the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps Thalia was right, and she was just stressed about her first day at a new school. Maybe once she got to know her better, the two could also become friends, and all three could hang out together.
“Oh… um okay, sure,” Ella responded with a tense smile, trying - and failing - to hide her chagrin. She had been hoping to spend more time catching up with her cousin, particularly considering their lack of contact over the summer months, but it seemed she would have to wait until they arrived at the school to do so. “I guess we’ll see each other when we get to the school then?” She asked, hoping to confirm some kind of plans as reassurance that there would be another time to talk.

"Only if you're sure, I can find somewhere else to sit." As much as he wanted to sit here he would also give up the seat if she wanted it. Meredith Morgan Fey. That wasn't a name he knew and he was now curious if she was new this year, either a first year or a transfer. It made him feel guiltier about wanting the seat here if that was the case. The train ride could be hard for a new student but if she already knew someone then she should sit with them.
"I'm Dustin Burke, it was nice to meet you." One hand uncertainly rose to wave a little as she turned away from them and went on her way. Breathing out in relief he came into the compartment before he could lose the spot and took a seat. The train ride was long after all and he would much rather sit with the people he knew, having to look for another compartment would have been weird. "Oh um, no. Not really. My Mum still wants me to pick an owl so I might end up with one of those instead."
Salem Academy, that was a wizarding school from America is memory served him and he wondered how Meredith was adjusting to such a big move. Dustin would be devastated to leave his home, his friends, and his school. So when Thalia mentioned wanting to ride with her to help her out he smiled faintly. While he would miss her on the train ride they would have all year to catch up. "I think I would be too, its a really big move and not knowing anyone would be awful. Its really nice of you to help her and I hope she can get settled okay."

Les sanglots longs
Des violons
De l’automne
His eyes had barely scanned the first stanza before in came the girl with her luggage wheeled shortly behind her. Julian glanced up from his cross-legged position in the corner of the compartment, eyeing her over once more as she began to fiddle with her belongings - rummaging through her trunk. He glanced over the suitcase for any markings or monograms to hint at who she was or what family she belonged to - but everything was smooth and clear. His eyes left her trunk and went back to his book.
Blessent mon coeur
D’une langueur
Monotone.
Her rustling had ceased, a gentle quiet enveloping the compartment, only momentarily, it seemed - for suddenly magic was being utilized: "Wingardium Leviosa," Julian looked up, catching her hefty trunk hovering in the air between them, guided up to the racks by her raised wand. He eyed the trunk as it wobbled slightly before she gently pushed it the rest of the way - settling it into the overhead compartment across from his own. Talented. He assumed she was a first year student by her appearance, so the mastery of a charm prior to any lessons was impressive. Moreover, he was comforted to know she came from a magical family, at least. No mudblood would know how to cast basic charms before any magical schooling. At this thought, Julian relaxed ever so slightly. "Très bien," he complimented, "where did you learn your magic?" He was curious, and perhaps her answer may provide him with some insight into her background.
Having returned his concentration to the page before him, Julian felt her presence exactly opposite himself. He wondered why on earth she had chosen to sit so close to him - what with his long legs stealing most of the space between them - but also because they were strangers. Had his intervention given her false friendliness? Perhaps he should remedy this. He was not a friend. As he again looked over at her, clear annoyance crossing his features, he caught the title of the book she had claimed from her trunk, stalling his planned verbal attack.
"Ah, drivel," Julian remarked quietly, recognizing the book as a load of absolute misinformation. Magical beings were not to be raised above their station. "I do not regret that I was able to circumvent sitting through those classes." He had learned that Beings Studies was a first and second year mandatory class for new students at Hogwarts. He, however, had managed to skip those beginner classes with exception from his learnings at Beauxbaton. Thankfully he hadn't been required to listen to a Professor attempt to indoctrinate him.

Outwardly, Ella seemed to be just fine with the idea of Thalia going off to sit with the new student. Nonetheless, Thalia could sense some sort of uneasiness coming from her - or was she only imagining it, projecting her own feelings onto her cousin? The situation was uncomfortable to her in a way she could not put her finger on. It wasn't as though she was doing something wrong by choosing to share the ride with a transfer student. Oh, if only all of them could have fit into one compartment - she was sure Meredith would have become a part of the friend group in no time.
She gave Ella a bright smile. "We will! And we can all hang out tomorrow after class, if you'd like?" Her hazel eyes flicked to Blaise and Dustin as well - hopefully, there would be enough time to catch up. The first day of school could be so hectic.
At least Dustin expressed a full understanding of Thalia's motivations. He could be so incredibly empathic. "Yes, exactly. I want her to feel welcome at Hogwarts. Anyway, I'll join you at the feast!" Since Dustin was in the same house, she could hopefully claim a seat next to him. With any luck, Meredith would join them at the Slytherin table as well. "Alright, I better go now." She slipped out through the door and walked down the narrow corridor. This train ride started out with such a hassle, she was glad Dad had already taken her cat to Hogwarts. Le Fay wouldn't have liked all the commotion.
The second-year passed several full compartments and was beginning to worry that the one Meredith ended up in would also have no free seats left. She let out a quick sigh of relief when she spotted the other girl seated alone. The trolley lady was just entering the wagon as Thalia claimed a seat in front of her new classmate. Since she had a few Galleons to spare, she planned on buying plenty of snacks. "Are there Chocolate Frog Cards in the United States? Everyone who collects them here has at least one Morgan le Fay - she's a popular one."

The praise, uttered in French, was already pushing the limits of Olivia's feigned ignorance. If she hadn't known who she was talking to, she would be starting to suspect right about now. Somehow, miraculously, she resisted the urge to respond with a Merci, monsieur. Explaining why her parents wanted her to learn the language might be tricky, if she was to remain truthful - and she planned to. While she was interested in observing how Julian would treat a complete stranger, uttering lies in order to prolong the charade would be harmful to their fragile connection.
"I learned magic from books, and by watching my parents. They agreed to buy me a wand for my eleventh birthday, in January. There was plenty of time to practice." Had she ever written to him about using her parents' wands without their permission? She was almost sure she had; best not to mention it now.
Soon after Olivia settled down, her peripheral vision registered Julian looking at her again. He appeared to be unhappy about something, which baffled her. There had been no time for her to do anything wrong yet, unless... was she invading his personal space by sitting opposite to him? She was usually quite intuitive when guessing what people were thinking or feeling. Just in case, she shifted to the side and lifted her legs onto the bench. With her back leaned against the window wall, this was a rather comfortable position for reading. It also guaranteed that, should someone dare to enter their compartment, they wouldn't be sitting on Olivia's bench.
Her dark eyes continued to scan the index page, taking in the various topics. Werewolves. Veelas. Goblins. Hags. Vampires. Merpeople. Centaurs. Half-humans. Would all of those creatures truly be presented as differently-shaped humans, deserving of the same rights and privileges as the wizardkind?
Julian's next words only referenced her book. Perhaps that was what bothered him, rather than her proximity. Did he think she was reading it out of genuine interest in the so-called 'beings'? She tried to ignore the obvious reference to him spending the first few years of his schooling elsewhere, and focus instead on the part that any respectable Pureblood would want to clarify. "I wish I could do so as well. This class will be wasting an hour of my life every week for the next two academic years." A mischievous half-smile appeared on her lips. "However, I intend to make the professor's job difficult. My parents made sure I learned more details about subhuman creatures than this pitiful textbook could provide. I shall endeavour to ask plenty of thought-provoking questions about the study materials." With any luck, her classmates' thoughts could indeed be provoked this way. Whether they rose up to disagree with her, or stopped to really listen to the truth, at least they would not be sitting in the class and soaking up the propaganda like a bunch of sponges. "Perhaps I'll get kicked out of the class for good for being too disruptive... one can only hope."

Calvin smiled as he listened to the other person speak. It was always interesting to hear other accents and Calvin wanted him to speak more and the others too so he could hear more of the accent he loved. “ Cool.” He responded with the same cheeky grin he had on his face just before. “ So Don definitely a fourth year, what grade are you in? “ He asked totallly oblivious to the fact that Don was playing around with his words. Calvin’s oblivious mind assumed that Don’s name was actually Don definitely a fourth year.
When asked about his story, Calvin had to laugh a little at the amount of times he has had to explain himself to multiple other people before him and more possibly many more in the future. “ I came from Augustine in Australia. “ He started before waving down the lady with the trolley that was coming by. “ Did youse want a bite to eat or anything at al? “ He said as he began pointing to multiple thing and handing over his money. “ Keep the change. “ He said not really knowing how the currency system here worked but handing over 10 Galleons for something that costs 2 Galleons. “ So enjoy the snacks as you please. “ He said placing it on his lap before looking back at Don definitely a fourth year, Insuk and Romy.
“ Oh right, I was in Augustine based in Australia and then I competed in the Dodecawizard Tournament and came first runner up. No bad blood with the winner though she was amazing. I then met myself a bird who now lives close to here so I transferred over now. “ He had to pause before wondering if there was anything else he needed to add. “ Any other questions? “ He asked looking back at the three of them before looking down at the snacks on his lap.

Henrietta's entrance into the compartment was as swift as it was silent. Just moments after Thalia Burke had disappeared down the corridor, Henrietta appeared, her trunk dragging behind her as she searched for a place to sit. As luck would have it, during a brief pause to flex her reddened hand, sore from gripping the trunk's handle, her gaze fell upon a compartment with only three occupants.
Without hesitation, she grabbed her trunk and slid the door open, stepping inside. She didn't bother with introductions or pleasantries, instead focusing on the task at hand. With a heave, she lifted her trunk into the overhead storage space, then promptly plopped down into the empty seat next to the boy she vaguely recognized as one of the Burkes.
"Henrietta Wilson, a pleasure," she finally said, offering a crisp smile to the three of them. Then, without missing a beat, she opened her satchel and pulled out a well-worn copy of "A History of Magic" by Bathilda Bagshot. She flipped it open to chapter 21, marked by a silk blue ribbon nestled between the pages. Deciding to save the ribbon's placement until she finished both chapters 21 and 22, she immersed herself in the book.
Her actions were performed with such swift efficiency that it seemed as though she had not just invaded the compartment mere moments ago, but rather had been there all along, quietly engrossed in her reading.

The train thrummed rhythmically beneath them, the muffled sounds of its pistons the perfect white noise for Julian to concentrate on a book. However, he had found himself with this unaccounted for company, and he had not yet placed her or her lineage on his radar, making this an almost game of cat and mouse. Simply asking for her name seemed rudimentary and plain unexciting. And if she were a lesser witch than he suspected, well, he would soon make sure she was thrown out of his compartment to face the vultures alone.
"I learned magic from books, and by watching my parents..." Ah, at least a half-blood, though he was inclined to believe she was more than that - her posture and her manner of speaking hinted at a high education, perhaps even lessons in etiquette. Julian himself had taken such lessons too, though they had not lasted particularly long as politeness did not come naturally to him. Regardless, he had learned the basics of proper etiquette - even if they were rarely put into practice.
Her choice to sit directly by him indeed irked him, though she had alleviated this by shifting to sit sideways across her cushioned seat, lifting her legs up and away from his own. He appreciated the movement as now there was no risk of the two of them brushing each other. Almost immediately his features smoothed - the look of annoyance leaving his expression, though his eyes still studied her as she began to read the nonsensical text. He verbalised his dissatisfaction of Beings Studies, and was pleasantly surprised to hear the girl mirror those feelings. Her words brought a small smirk to his lips, and Julian dropped his gaze back to his poetry, finally...someone civilized. "A necessary evil," he responded rather coaxingly, "how are we to better repress and control our quarry than to know their weaknesses?" It was the one redeeming factor in being forced to sit through the heavily propagandized class: that one could potentially learn the downfalls of lesser beings and weaponize them.
As she mentioned her plans and spoke of creatures as subhuman, Julian could feel a spark of regard begin to grow for the younger student. He would have to be careful - sweet words were easy, and he would not let himself be swayed too early. Replanting his guard, he nodded, "I would approve of such disruptive methodologies," he flipped his page, raising a leg to rest the ankle on his opposite knee comfortably, now crossed, "it is pleasing to me to know that you will not be brainwashed by the curriculum." She then mentioned her hope of being kicked out of the classroom, "Lupin is a coward, even if you were overtly disruptive he would not have the backbone to dismiss you from his class." Julian had spied the Professor several times at Hogwarts, and had always disliked his cheerful nature. He was soft. "The best I fear you can achieve is to make him look like the fool he is."
A rapping on their doorway interrupted Julian's thought process, and he glowered in the direction of the doorway as the trolley lady poked her head in, cart rattling beside her. "Something from the trolley, dears?"

Ella returned her cousin’s smile in kind, trying her best to be understanding, and glad to have some kind of confirmation that the pair would catch up at a later time. However, as she disappeared down the hallway, Ella felt a pit in her stomach. In the hopes of distracting herself from the feeling and shaking herself out of this weird mood she picked back up her book and began reading, leaving the boys to catch up amongst themselves for the time being.
That did not last long, however, as another familiar face soon joined their compartment. Ella was a bit confused as to why she introduced herself, before quickly realizing that she probably had never met her brother. “Hi Henrietta,” She greeted, hoping the girl would remember her from their previous year. While they hadn’t been the closest of friends, they had shared a dorm for a whole school year, and so Ella hoped she would have at least made enough of an impression to be remembered to some extent.
“This is Dustin, my brother. Not sure if you two would have met last year. He’s in Slytherin house.” She gestured over to him as she made the introduction, hoping to quell any awkwardness. “And I’m sure you remember Blaise,” she added as she motioned to the last occupant of their compartment. Blaise was generally quite friendly, and so she was sure Henrietta would remember him, particularly since they were all in the same house. “So how was your summer?”

It didn’t feel like long before the train took off from the station, Meredith watching as King’s Cross faded in the distance, making way for the city of London and, not long after, the English countryside. Every time she heard some noise of students walking by, she perked up a bit, hoping for some company to distract her from her nerves. While outwardly she appeared quite confident, as per her intention, deep down the prospect of starting at a new school, in a new country, was daunting. Luckily she didn’t have to wait too long until Thalia joined her in the compartment, the sight of her new friend causing her to smile.
Meredith’s eyebrows raised in confusion as she mentioned Chocolate Frog Cards. She had never heard of such cards, as was about to say so, when Thalia mentioned her ancestor. She changed her expression to one of recognition, trying to play off her confusion as a momentary lapse of memory. “Oh yes, of course! I think I remember my parents mentioning something about that.” This was a complete lie, but Meredith did not want Thalia to know this. If her ancestor’s likeness was used in these cards, somehow her family must have been involved, surely. The fact that she had no idea would not bode well if that were the case. “They’re not very popular in the states,” she admitted, “but I believe I’ve seen some in specialty stores.”
She was quite relieved for the change of subject when the trolley witch reached their compartment. Looking through the selection, she picked out a few licorice wands and a box of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Bean. She was taking out her cash to pay when she noticed a selection of Chocolate Frogs. She decided to grab a few of those as well, hoping to get a better idea of what they were. It took a bit longer for her to figure out the right amount of money to give, getting a bit confused as to which coin was which. “Sorry, still getting used to your currency,” she apologized with a laugh when she finally handed over the money, feeling her cheeks flush a bit in embarrassment.
Karissa was so glad to have finally made it to the train. Indeed, she was not one to complain much, but take into context the fact that she took the airplane to England on her own, got stuck in traffic as she tried getting to the train station, and nearly flew across the station while dragging that suitcase of her's weighing like a bunch of rocks; there stood mental and physical stresses. Squeezing her way through the bubbling crowd of families and children giving their last affections before leaving, Karissa sighed. True, she felt a little sour. It felt nice not to be so independent. However, did it matter? No. She was never the type to dwell. She understood her parents were too busy with the temple, the mountain, the meetings, etc; they were caught up last minute because of that minacious incident. Yes, she agreed to herself, she would forget. The first few compartments seemed to be full. Running out of patience with the only thing being able to finally relax —both her thoughts and body—on her mind, Karissa speed walked to the last one. Friends she could make later, but boy oh boy she was going to get that rest of her's now. "Oh my god, hi!" Not expecting anyone, she was a little startled when she realized that there was already someone in the compartment. They probably saw her with her face deadpan, which naturally made her look annoyed and contemptuous even though she didn't mean it. Feeling a little guilty, Karissa automatically smashed the brightest smile her muscles could hold on to her face.
Staring blankly through the glass window, Henri continued to gaze out into the brick wall outside of his window as he heard yet another whistle blaring through the compartments before jumping and letting out a small gasp when the sudden voice of a girl burst his staring competition with a brick wall he was losing against.
" Hello." He replied quickly as he stood up smashing the top of his head against the bag railing above them where he let out a small groan before placing himself back into his seat. " Sorry." He apologised as if he were both apologising to the railing and the girl in front of him. " Oh, hello." He greeted with a soft smile as he began rubbing the top of his head.

Interesting, huh. Nicha had been about to ask why Levi described his summer break as such, but was distracted by him showing a sudden interest in her spicy rice crackers.
She giggled as she watched him react to the hot sensation spreading through his mouth, and ate a spicy cracker herself with less of a reaction due to an established familiarity with the taste. “I never joke about spiciness. I guess we will be leaving soon…” she said, also hearing the whistle in the distance while she chewed.
She moved Bua away from her lap again and edged closer to the window. Her parents left the station after she boarded the train, so all she saw through the window were other families saying their goodbyes. Of course, she did not miss her family when she last saw them just a few minutes ago, but her appreciation for them seemed to increase exponentially every time she departed for school.
Retracting her glance from the window and her wandering mind from the sentimental moment, Nicha rummaged in her backpack again. “I just remembered that I wanted to show you something!” From her bag she carefully took out a badge, which had a large P superimposed on a Hufflepuff badger. Not feeling the need to explain further and suspecting that the Ravenclaw also had a badge like this, she beamed and held it out for Levi to see.

The third student to enter the last compartment was also not sent off by her family on platform nine and three quarters. Acacia’s mother was halfway across the world at Xanadu School, preparing for her own new term. She did not know nor care where her father was, though if she had to guess, she would assume that he was either working on his stupid Muggle robot collection or actually working. Her younger brother however, was on the Hogwarts Express with her. A first year eager to make friends, he had left her as soon as she finished helping him heave his luggage onto the train. She had stared after the ungrateful brat for an annoyed moment before pulling her luggage in the opposite direction. Unlike her brother, she did not feel that she had to be BFFs with the first people she saw on the train, but she did need a compartment to sit in for the long journey to Hogwarts.
Glancing through the windows in the doors, she decided that she could not sit in each of the compartments she passed for reasons such as: the students already seated looking too happy, too depressed, having dyed hair, having disgustingly cute pets, and one compartment just had too much food being shared. Eventually, she arrived at the last one. She did not want to drag her suitcase through the entire screening process again, and fortunately the occupants of this last compartment did not seem to have any of the visible characteristics she detested. It looked like the girl was just settling in and the boy had just smashed his head into the luggage railing.
“Hello, um, I’m a transfer student and I don’t really know anybody around here. Hope the two of you don’t mind me joining.” Putting on a shy smile - not entirely acting because she did feel awkward in front of people she just met - Acacia edged into the room and sat down. Once again, she blamed her parents for getting divorced at the worst timing. If they had not done so just before she was about to begin her first year at Hogwarts, she would not have left to Xanadu and this whole painful transfer ordeal would not have been necessary.
