It was a little less then a month before Joie would be turning 13. Thirteen was a big age and she would be spending it away from her family. But she would make the best of what she had. She smiled brightly and walked gently from the Ravenclaw tower, down to the courtyard, She bounced down the stairs as any little one would. Soon she would be thirteen, a teenager and she had so many plans. Her first plan, a date. Joie needed a Date for her thirteenth birthday, her first boyfriend!
The only thing was, she was bad a flirting and bad at figuring out if a boy liked her or not. She smiled brightly as she walked gently over to her favorite spot in the courtyard. She wasn't sure how to tell the boy she liked she liked him. So today she would go over her speech to him, in hopes he would feel the same about her.
Dove didn't really have very many friends here at Hogwarts. She was too shy and awkward to talk to anyone, and didn't know how to fill the space with words or what anyone may even be interested in talking about. She kept to herself, spending lots of time reading about Magical Creatures and studying either in the Ravenclaw Tower or the Library.
It was a nice afternoon, even for March, so she decided to go enjoy the sunlight while she could. She was carrying a book in the crook of her arm as she stepped into the Courtyard, hoping to find a spot to sit and read. Her eyes landed on a her roommate, Joie, a fellow red-haired student, across the Courtyard. Feeling it would be impolite not to say hello, as they were the only two in the area, Dove made her way to the girl. "Hello, Joie. How's it g-going?" She asked, stuttering half-way through her sentence and hoping it wasn't obvious how much energy it took to make the small talk. She wanted to make friends, she really did.
Joie didn’t really have many friends at Hogwarts. Not because she did not want friends, she was just kind of annoying. Joie had a hard time paying attention and calming down. Over the Christmas break she had learned how to center herself and calm her every roaming mind.
As she sat smiling in the court yard she heard a voice and looked up. Standing before her was her dorm mate. She smiled brightly and waved “Dove! How are you?” She greeted brightly. She looked down at parchment and up to her friend. “I’m planning my birthday! Wanna help?”
Joie knew she could be a lot sometimes, but she really just wanted to be herself and she wasn’t going to apologize for that. She smiled gently and looked lightly at her. “So Question….” Joie began lightly. “Do you know anything about boys?”
Even though the pair had lived in the same dorm room for almost a full two years now, Dove still hadn't said much to Joie in the way of conversation. It wasn't that the other girl wasn't nice - she was extremely so - it was just that Dove herself was so introverted and quiet. She had a hard time talking to people. So, when Joie called her over, she obliged, even though she knew she'd inevitably stumble over her words.
She joined the girl and sat down by her on the bench, keep a careful distance, her posture rigid. She was always so tense, so worried. She needed to relax. "S-sure." She answered. As if she were the best candidate to plan a party. Still, she was excited that Joie had asked her. She turned pink as soon as Joie's next question was uttered, squirming a bit in her seat. "Boys? I....don't t-talk to boys." She admitted.
Joie smiled as her roommate joined her. Joie absolutely adored the girl and was so excited she was getting to finally have a conversation with her. She smiled gently as the girl agreed to help plan her party, “Okay so we are gonna have to do some sneaking. My sister told me about this room that literally changes into anything you want, have you been there?” Joie kept going with out missing a beat.
Joie frowned when her friend said she didn’t talk to boys. “I don’t either. I really want to though! There is this boy in Hufflepuff I think he is super cute. Although I don’t think he is in anyway interested in me. But I guess that is okay.” Joie just spoke and giggled gently towards herself. “Do you think boys are cute?”
She was aware she was a hard person to converse with, but she couldn't help her shy or nervous nature. Luckily, Joie was so kind, accommodating, and patient with her. Dove was extremely grateful for the girl in that regard. "No, I've never heard about it. How did she learn about it?" She asked, growing curious. Her own thirst for new ideas and information was never-ending.
"W-what boy are y-you t-talking about?" She asked. The talk of boys had caused her to become nervous and the stutter inevitably returned. She couldn't even bring herself to look at boys, much less talk to them. "I don't know if I've really looked at any of them..." She admitted. Should she really say that, and make herself sound like a loser?
Joie looked at her bright eyed when her roommate said she had not been to the mysterious room. "OH! We should go soon, me and you! My sister found it last year in our first year and of course she just had to tell me." Joie was so excited to show Dove all of the beautiful new things she could find out about their home in the castle.
"His name is Alessio and he he has no clue I exist." She dramatically fawned like the girls in the muggle movies she had watched. "I mean not a lot of girls our age are actually interested in boys or heck even girls yet. It's normal." Joie said lightly trying to make her friend feel a little better. She must admit she was a little advance for her age. Joie smiled at her friend, "SO any big plans for the summer?"
Joie's infectious excitement was enough to raise her spirits, as per usual. That was part of the reason why she liked being around the other redhead so much - she just had such a wonderful take on things. She was nearly impossible to dislike. "That sounds fun." She was honestly open to any and all adventures with her.
"What house is he in?" Dove asked, squinting her eyes as she tried to remember. The irises flashed a deep shade of green as she sorted mentally through the Hogwarts students near their age, but she honestly couldn't place him. As for Dove, her romantic interests were zilch. "Not too much. Although, I'm going to be helping Primrose, my little sister, get ready for her first year at Hogwarts." She explained. She couldn't wait to have her sister here with her.
Joie loved Dove so much, she knew the other girl was shy and stayed to herself, but Joie would protect her with her life. If anyone asked Joie who her best friend was, Joie would tell you Dove was. Joie looked at Dove and smiled brightly. "Do you think I could possible get away with getting food from the kitchens for whoever shows up?" Joie said quickly changing topics smiling brightly.
When Dove came back around about her crush Joie smiled, "He is a hufflepuff, although he has a twin in Gryffindor." Joie said smiling towards her friend. "Oh Her first year! How exciting! I cannot wait to meet your little sister Dove. I bet you she is as amazing as you are!" Joie gushed over her friend brightly.
Dove was glad to have a friend around like Joie. She was bright and cheerful, the exact complement to Dove's own introverted weirdness. They were awkward, sure, but in their own unique ways. She had a feeling Joie would stand up for her no matter what. "I know a secret way to get into the kitchens. The Caretaker showed me." She admitted. It felt nice to know such a secret.
"What's his name? Do I know him?" She tried to remember the twins Joie spoke of, but she was honestly coming up blank. "Prim is very excited to come. She's very different than me, though. She's more like you, a lot braver." She admitted. She didn't find herself to be very bold at all.
Joie smiled gently, she loved her friend dearly, they had shared the same room for two years and she never felt as if Dove were awkward, she figured it was because she had attached herself to her roommate before her roommate even knew she was attached. Joie protected Dove with everything she had because Dove was her best friend. She smiled gently when Dove began to speak. "A secret passage?!? Girl! You have got to show me you are the best!"
Joie smiled brightly towards Dove, she never wanted Dove to feel weird or awkward around her. She was perfect in everyway. She smiled brightly as her friend talked, "His name is Alessio and he is a hufflepuff. I think his twin is a gryffindor but I don't know his name, as I have never met him." She said speaking excitedly about the cute Hufflepuff boy she had been trying to get to notice her.
"I think you are brave Dove. You are one of the bravest people I know." She said wondering how her bestie didn't see how brave she was. "I cannot wait to meet her, if she is half amazing as you are, I am going to love her!"
She liked feeling as if she was useful, and providing the fact to Joie made her feel just that. The girl was like a sun that the world centered around, and Dove was glad to just be a part of the adventures. She was also glad Joie had never made her feel quiet, or boring, or inadequate. She owed her so much. "I can take you there. The entrance is behind a painting of fruit." She explained, her tone pleased that her best friend found her offering so exciting.
"I don't know if I'm sure who you're talking about..." She admitted. She wasn't one to pay attention to boys in general. They didn't pay much attention to her, so it was easier just to write them off. Plus, they were much less entertaining than her books. "Maybe you could describe him for me?" She offered. Perhaps that would trigger something.
She wasn't sure how to respond to Joie calling her brave - that was literally an adjective she'd never heard in conjunction with her own name before. She squirmed a little, ducking her head. "I guess, maybe, but....she's just different. I hope people like her."
When Dove offered to take her Joie was so excited she instantly piped up "A painting of a fruit? How curious." Joie said brightly looking at her best friends smiling. "Ugh How did I ever get so blessed with a best friend like you?!" she said truthfully, Joie was forever grateful to her best friend.
"He has brown hair and is kinda tall I guess." She said trying to describe the Hufflepuff. She smiled brightly and looked at her friend, "I doubt he likes me back though, he is super popular he could really get any girl he wanted." She said gently thinking about him lightly.
"Different is the best thing too be! Whose to say what is normal?" She said gently smiling. She hoped her friend wouldn't be upset with her. She loved Dove and she knew she would love Prim.
The red head always knew exactly what to say to make Dove feel at ease. She was perhaps the introvert's greatest fan, and Dove had found herself immensely grateful perhaps a thousand times over that she had taken such a kindness to have Dove under her wing. It made things at Hogwarts so much easier. "I'll definitely show it to you." She promised. She was glad to be useful.
Dove couldn't really picture the Hufflepuff Joie spoke of, so she shrugged. It seemed all the girls around her were beginning to go a bit boy crazy. For her, as long as she had a book and a quiet place, she was happy. "I guess you'll have to point him out to me sometime." She really ought to take more interest in her classmates.
"When Prim gets here, you'll have to help me show her around. There's so much of the castle to see." Prim had also already expressed an interest in Quidditch - Dove was going to have to find someone to explain it all to her.
